Press release: World renowned and Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Bebel Gilberto has been enchanting fans and critics worldwide since her solo debut release in 1986. She catapulted onto the global music scene with a track on the celebrated compilation CD, ‘RED HOT + RIO,’ followed by the worldwide success of her hit breakout album ‘Tanto Tempo’ in 2000. The album featured her trademark electronic bossa nova, taking over clubs around the world and positioning Bebel as one of the top-selling Brazilian artists in the U.S. since the '60s. Critically-acclaimed albums to follow included Red Hot + Rio’, 'Bebel Gilberto' (2004), on which she refined her sound to create an acoustic lounge style that showcased her strengths as a Brazilian composer, and ‘Momento’ (2007), which masterfully showcased her skills at fusing all her musical styles. Bebel’s most recent release, the Grammy-nominated ‘All in One’ (Verve 2009), brought to forefront more of Bebel's personality and love for organic rhythms.

Here's a great sample of Bebel's various musical styles that may be seen and heard this Saturday at the Capitol Theater show.

I was so excited to hear she was coming to town, and so disappointed to realize I'll be gone that weekend. Hope it's a packed house!

Yes, too bad you can't be there. Tell all your friends to go and they can report back.

I can't express what a disappointment this was. She came out on stage, half (if not all the way) in the bag and was constantly fighting with the mic cord and stand. She talked and babbled during at least a third of the time she was on stage and when she did finally get around to singing, she constantly interrupted herself with sound check requests. She brought the band out to stagefront after only 4 songs for bows... "Gooooodnight Madison" she slurred. At one point she tried to speak into the water bottle she was holding in her non-mic hand. I felt sorry for her band, and everyone in attendance.

What concert did you attend?
Bebel was charming, singing like a bird, and interacting with an audience that clapped and sang along with the engaging Brazilian songstress (all except Eric who must have a needed a change of adult Depends)! Her music and band was fantastic, spot on singing, that met if not exceeded her recordings. Maybe some audience members expected a Vegas-style Celine Dion honk-a-thon to be entertained, but the evening was intimate. While Eric seemed to have trouble listening to people speak with accents, Bebel was delightful, amusing, and 100% herself. Dressed in a slinky black Brazilian dress, her dancing highlighted a lithe frame that did not seem hampered by drugs or drink. BTW when "she spoke into her water bottle," she then took a sip! The sound system at the Capitol was wonderful but the apparatus that Bebel used to hear herself was malfunctioning and she dealt with it humorously. Although Eric did not appreciate it, she did not lose any of her deft vocal quality whether she wore the ear-pieces or not. In all a fantastic show! Singing her most famous cover "So Nice," as a capper to a 16-song set that lasted 90 minutes, her songs were familiar to my wife and I who have been fans for years. A group of nearly 100 audience members were treated to a dance floor in the theater's orchestra pit that allowed a close-up view of one of Brazil's most amazing performers. Bebel congratulated the Capitol Theater, while musing "why can't we have such a beautiful theater in New York?" The band offered a perfect backdrop to Bebel's performance. And note to Eric, when she told the Madison Crowd to "Go home and Make Love," it was an invitation to continue the intimacy and relish the glow she put on the evening, not an admonition to 'go f*&$ yourself,' although based on your sourpuss estimate of the show, maybe you should have.

Wow. Glad you had such a good time, Pluto. Sorry that so many others were unable to appreciate it.
