WHITE DENIM
Who: Garage-rock trio White Denim, an Austin outfit whose frontman, James Petralli, nearly followed his family into a career in professional baseball, but turned to rock when he got busted for too much partying.
Sounds Like: On their loud and raw EP Let's Talk About It, which was written and recorded in a 1940s Spartan trailer, the band combines the Stooges' raw power, Hendrix's psychedelic flourishes and the White Stripes' stripped-down blues rock.

BRAZOS
Brazos‘ Martin Crane wrote the songs on Phosphorescent Blues during a week of peaceful euphoria in his South Austin home. Writing on classic themes – transient love, friendship, communities – Crane evokes the loss of youthful illusion and the calm, uneasy accomplishment of that loss. Like the adapted Adrienne Rich poem, “The Observer,” the album tries to break free from the constraints of the city it’s grown into, escaping by turning inward.
Brazos has built on a solid two years worth of buzz in Austin since their first EP, opening for Vampire Weekend, Grizzly Bear, Wye Oak, Bowerbirds, and more. Now, Brazos make good on their proven promise with a confident and truly unique first album. -BrazosBrazos.com
HIS & HER VANITIES
(Locals) His And Her Vanities tumbles and screeches into cleverly bent-up pop that shows a clear love for the jarring sounds of Brainiac and Enon. Most of HHV’s tunes, though, keep it a bit more sweet and catchy, not getting overly caught up in mechanical new-wave weirdness. -A.V. Club
