I find this a bit of a mystery myself. I have a hard time believing the Brink Lounge is paying for itself, I think they had a good chunk invested in the University Square sports bar that never happened, and yet here they are trying to open something else? I think they're looking for a Peter to pay Paul.

The third floor is going to have pinball machines (and also pool tables).

I guess I feel like if you're going to go with a theme, no matter how rough that theme may be, go all the way with it, commit to it down to the last detail.
Going from nondescript bar to nondescript doesn't scratch me where I itch, and there's too many in Madison where the only difference of bar-to-bar is in the name.
Sure, themed bars are usually flash in the pan, but somehow I find that more exciting than bars that manage to stick around for a lifetime (like the Silver Dollar) which haven't changed one iota.

And before anyone calls me out for calling out the Silver Dollar...
I'm all for preserving history worth preserving, and sometimes I envy Milwaukee and Southeastern Wisconsin who seem to extol that well-documented virtue at every turn (at times as if there's nothing better).
But from the few times I've been in the Silver Dollar, I feel like it's devoid of that charm which usually goes hand-in-hand with character. If that's what exemplifies downtown Madison's (bar-going) past, I think it's turn time turn the page (Mickey's is a keeper though).

Don't you usually pay people to do that?

Maybe the boys could just revive the Bally's Tomfooleries franchise.

Went to the Brink Lounge last week for Mad Toast Live. Gotta say I was pretty impressed by that production. The laid back comfy atmosphere in the Brink is nice, though sort of hotel lobbyish. It sounded REALLY good down there for the jazz combo I heard. Can't figure out exactly how the Brink makes any money. My friend would likely apply the bo-de-ga label to the Brink. Hmm.

I would be surprised if The Brink turns a profit, but he/his partner own the building; collecting rent from The High Noon and The Brass Ring helps subsidize his establishment.

Ha! I've been saying this forever... not just a hotel lobby, but a 70s airport hotel lobby. I love it.

I can't speak to how solvent The Brink is, but I do know they book a lot of special events these days-- weddings, reunions, other gatherings. It's pretty standard on the weekends to have the nightclub busy with some occasion while a separate, more public event is happening in the lounge.

Also, while I'm somewhat biased in that Chris and Mary of Mad Toast Live are friends of mine, I'd be a fan of the show regardless. Great vibe and production all around.

Btw, supa, bodega? The Brink is like a Hispanic mini-mart?

@beans- See #2 at Urban Dictionary: "2. In a Spanish-speaking country, a wine shop or a warehouse for the storage of wine."
Quite a few bottles surround the bar area at The Brink.
