What? No Neko Case? Lucinda Williams?

Your list is pretty old school--I can't argue with Billie and Ella, but Linda Ronstadt? She's more purdy than talented, and now she anin't even that purdy any more. I got over my intense crush for her about 1981. If you wanna list '70s songstresses, I'd recommend Carly Simon.

I assume your list has nothing to do with rock & roll.

1. Nina Simone
2. Neko Case
3. Lauryn Hill
4. Loretta Lynn
5. Gladys Knight
6. Annette Hanshaw
7. Gillian Welch
8. Patsy Cline
9. Ella Fitzgerald
10. Bjork

I'd give most improved pipes to Jenny Lewis (who started off singing pretty far-off-key in Rilo Kiley but is a great singer now) and I'd give favorite local status to Erika from the Hemlines. She's boss.

I don't need a list:
1. Mia Zapata of the Gits (RIP)

The Gits should have been huge and have one of the most tragic arcs of any rock band in history.

I've always been fond of Dinah Washington. Betty Carter has such a nice ringing tone. But favorites? Sometimes it really depends on who's singing at the moment.

As far as contemporary singers, I really like Camille, Madeleine Peyroux, Susan Tedeschi, Lucinda Williams, and Gillian Welch.

Ooh: I need to add Oumou Sangaré. That woman has some sweet pipes!

I do know what Annie Lennox does and it's questionable at best!

Well, what with you being Cornish and all it shouldn't come as a shock that you've got a tin ear.

Get it? Tin ear?
