Steely Dan, "Katy Lied" (Bad Sneakers, Black Friday, Doctor Wu, this slab is a stone classic from top to bottom).

It is also the only album I can think of where the title and the album art form two halves of a joke. Neither half makes any sense without the other.

Great album. Once had a paranoid schizophrenic quote most of the lyrics from "Dr. Wu" to me on an elevator during a patient transport. Good times.

Those lyrics are pretty opaque.

Everyone's Gone To The Movies, Chain Lightning, Your Gold Teeth II...

The only song on that album I don't totally swing with is "Any World". The strident Michael McDonald vocals are a little too earnest when compared to the rest of the album.

"Chain Lightning" is one of the most pleasurable songs I can think of, by anybody.

By the way, I've been trying to expand my rock knowledge (aren't we all?), and listened to Budgie's Never Turn Your Back On A Friend for the first time recently. Rocking, fo sho, but I couldn't help but think they would have had more renown if the lead singer sounded at least as masculine as Ann Wilson.

New Coverville is a large chunk of London Calling, reinterpreted. Some really fun stuff here.

Oh man. I did not know that was Michael McDonald, but now that you mention it, OF COURSE it's Michael McDonald. Strident indeed.

See also "Ride Like The Wind."

Around 1976 (or thereabouts) Budgie, apparently on an extended work visa, spent some months in this area, living in Milwaukee I believe. I remember a summer afternoon show at Brittingham Park, and some club gigs.

What I'm listening to? Whatever the crew that siding the house next door wants to play. For over the last week it's been a mix of headbanging music, hard rock, shitkicking music and classic rock.

The Cars, Pink Floyd and Cheap Trick this afternoon were alright. Bob Seger and Van Halen, not so much. May I live a lifetime without ever again hearing Diamond Dave's squeal.

"...triple-headed rawk hydra Them Crooked Vultures, the supergroup comprised of Queen of the Stone Age Josh Homme, Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, and Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones. On Sunday night, the band played its first show, at Chicago's Metro after the Lollapalooza festivities came to a close. And last night on its Twitter, the band posted a link to a tiny sliver of a new track."

Best 14 seconds of music I've heard in some time.
