Pick a candidate, any candidate
Six Democrats vie for gig in 81st Assembly race

Democrats in the 81st Assembly District are spoiled for choice this fall. Six candidates are running for the seat being vacated by veteran lawmaker Dave Travis. All six have solid liberal credentials, with a background in community activism. And they tend to think alike on many issues — every single one wants to trash the current school funding formula, increase support for the UW System and pass a statewide smoking ban. >More

View photos inside and outside the refurbished facility

When the Goodman Atwood Community Center re-opens on Tuesday at the old Kupfer Iron Works Building on Waubesa Street, visitors can expect to find a work in progress. But what a piece of work it is. For the first time in memory, all of the center's programs -- including the Lussier Teen Center and the New Loft -- will be reunited under one roof. >More

Later, he reclined on the wire, head to toe, as if needing to catch his breath. >More

Don't pooh-pooh the fufu
Africana brings West African cuisine to Madison

Ever since Yirgalem, the beautiful Ethiopian restaurant on Monroe Street, closed a few summers back, I've been looking forward to a new African restaurant in Madison. Now the east side gets a chance to welcome Africana Restaurant and Lounge, on Atwood, serving West African cuisine. It's a simple storefront, but the vibrant walls of deep pumpkin go well with the vintage terrazzo floor, and the wooden bowls and plates make for a natural, casual atmosphere. >More

Scads of CDs
There's a spate of new releases from local acts

Judging from the abundant number of summertime releases by Madison-area musicians, very few local players are worried about the slumping market for recorded music. Here at Isthmus, we've received a dozen new CDs by local acts over the course of August, a month that usually sees half the city's population take off on vacation. >More

A crabby critic takes aim at coffee-time talkers

Israel and Iran have just declared war on each other, the Russians have landed on Mars and removed all our flags, and a Middleton man refuses to eat omelets not made with free-range eggs! Those headlines after this look at the weather. >More
