This coming week, in events that get to your heart through your stomach.

Highlights

Friday, July 15

What could be more appetizing than a hot brat eaten out in the hot sun? That's what you can find out as you hunt off-season bargains at the annual Maxwell Street Days on State Street. Invariably scheduled in the sweltering heat of mid-July, this annual summer shopping festival offers numerous opportunities to recharge and refuel, including with the aforementioned brats, or maybe a freshly griddled gyro and lemonade, or cool ice cream. Participating food vendors include State Street Brats, Tutto Pasta, Taste of Tibet, Quaker Steak & Lube, Gino's, Nick's Restaurant, Chocolate Shoppe, and Parthenon Gyros. State Street, between the Capitol Square and Library Mall, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. Call 512-1342 for more info.

Saturday, July 16

The Mount Horeb Art Fair, with more than 175 exhibitors, is worth visiting in and of itself, but a couple of culinary quirks are hiding behind the easels. The Sons of Norway are holding their Kaffe Stue, complete with Norwegian baked goods; lefse with butter and sugar, please? The Friends of the Library are having a pie sale -- you heard that right. With luck, someone remembered Mor-Mor's recipe for fruit soup pie. And to celebrate the village's sesquicentennial, the powers that be are giving away free cake and ice cream at a birthday party. Gratulerer med dagen. Mount Horeb, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. Call 888-765-5929 for more info.
