Capital Brewery and New Glarus Brewing were among the local beer makers winning awards at this year's Great American Beer Festival. The annual competition in Denver concluded on Saturday, drawing over 49,000 visitors to the three-day festival that includes awards in more than 75 categories. Nearly 500 breweries participated, mostly from the US, and submitted 3,300 beers vying for gold, silver and bronze medals.

Capital Brewery won a bronze medal for its Bavarian Lager in the Dortmunder and German-style Oktoberfest competition. New Glarus Brewing brought home two medals -- the Green County brewery took bronze medals for Raspberry Tart in the fruit beer entries and in the American-style lager category for Totally Naked.

Other Wisconsin winners in the 2009 Great American Beer Festival Competition included Titletown Brewing of Green Bay for its German Style Schwazbier (a dark German lager), and the Rock Bottom Brewery in Milwaukee won a gold medal for "106 Pilsner" in the German-style pilsner category.

Miller-Coors was also singled out for a number of awards. Some of the most familiar products of the Milwaukee beer giant took awards, sweeping the American-style cream ale and premium lager categories -- Milwaukee's Best received gold, Hamm's a silver, and Red Dog a bronze. Other Miller-produced beers that won medals included Steel Reserve (bronze, American-style specialty lager) and OE800 (silver, international-style pilsner). Additionnally, Miller-Coors and brewmaster Dr. David Ryder was named large brewing company of the year by the festival for the Coors operations in Golden, Colorado.
