County Board Countdown: Ingham, Downing, Kensgaard and Solberg
After detailing responses from candidates in 13 of 17 County Board races to our County Board Countdown questions, we were left with four races for which we received responses from only one candidate. Steven Ingham in the 11th, Patrick Downing in the 30th, Gordon Kensgaard in the 34th and Cynda Solberg in the 36th were kind enough to get back to us.
County Board Countdown: Dist. 15 -- Ronn Ferrell vs. Lisa Subeck
It's rare that an incumbent gets booted from the Dane County Board. So when Supv. Rich Brown lost his seat in the primary election, it was clear the residents of Dist. 15 were mad about something. The district, on Madison’s southwest side, has seen an increase in crime. But Brown, who owed thousands of dollars in back property taxes and was struggling financially, didn’t have time to address the issue.
County Board Countdown: Dist. 18 -- Sal Al-Ashkar vs. Dorothy Wheeler
Incumbent Dorothy Wheeler doesn't regard her challenger, Sal Al-Ashkar, as much of a threat. And since Dist. 18, on the north side of Madison, is not embroiled in the public safety or traffic controversies that have become big issues in other County Board races, she may be right. Voters might decide to stick with the incumbent here.
County Board Countdown: Dist. 26 -- Adrian Augustine vs. Mark Opitz
County Board District 26 covers much of northeast Middleton, wrapping around the northwest edge of Lake Mendota. The contest pits incumbent Mark Opitz against Adrian Augustine and appears to center on the commuter rail issue. Unlike other Dane County communities, Middleton will be directly affected by a line that would run from its downtown area through Madison to Sun Prairie.
County Board Countdown: Dist. 7 -- Dave Glomp vs. Matt Veldran
It’s not a surprise that Supv. Matt Veldran is facing a challenger this spring. His win over longtime board member David Blaska two years ago was an upset and helped hand control of the County Board to the liberals. But his seat is far from secure. His district, which includes southwest Madison and parts of Fitchburg, is not necessarily liberal. It’s represented by one of the more conservative alders on the Madison Common Council, Thuy Pham-Remmele.
County Board Countdown: Dist. 14 -- Vic Bankston vs. Melanie Hampton
Melanie Hampton and Vic Bankston are vying to fill the county board seat left empty by Madison Police Officer, and 2007 County Sheriff candidate, Mike Hansen. District 14 straddles Hwy. PD on the far southwest side of Madison.
County Board Countdown: Dist. 1 -- Scott McDonell vs. J.P. Heyn
Scott McDonell is one of the Dane County Board's more entrenched incumbents -- which is why it was a pleasant surprise to see J.P. Heyn take a whack at him. But Heyn, a 31-year-old sales representative with no political experience, is not a threat to McDonell.
County Board Countdown: Dist. 33 -- Jack Martz vs. Nancy Hylbert
Dane County District 33 is all about Fitchburg, the suburb located to the southwest of Madison that includes plenty of new development along with green space and farm land. As is the case with many other races for supervisor, the two candidates in 33 -- challenger Nancy Hylbert and incumbent Jack Martz -- differ over the Regional Transit Authority.
County Board Countdown: Dist. 4 -- Brett Hulsey vs. Greg Hull
Nowhere else does the question of what to do about Dane County's traffic problem loom larger than in Dist. 4. The district, on the west side of Madison, includes the heavily congested University Avenue, Mineral Point Road and Old Sauk Road. So it's not surprising that both candidates picked traffic -- and the proposed Regional Transit Authority -- as the issue that resonates with voters the most.
County Board Countdown: Dist. 28 -- Susan Beil vs. Kurt Schlicht
The village of Cross Plains was one of the first Dane County communities to vote against a proposed Regional Transit Authority. And you can thank Kurt Schlicht for that. As a village trustee, he takes credit for the rush to declare the RTA, which would raise funds for roads, bus service and commuter rail, a no-go in Cross Plains. Schlicht and his opponent, Susan Beil, a member of the Wisconsin Heights school board, are vying to replace Vern Wendt.
County Board Countdown -- Dist. 12: Ted Krez v. Paul Rusk
Ted Krez is doing what he can do drum up opposition to Supv. Paul Rusk, an incumbent has been on the board since 2002. Krez, who manages Lakewood Realty, has assailed Rusk for not supporting a move to add 12 more deputies to the Sheriff's department (which, again for the record, Sheriff Dave Mahoney did not support either). And Krez is making hay over Rusk's vote to give Dane County supervisors a 17% raise, from $7,000 a year to $8,200.
County Board Countdown: Dist. 9 -- Dianne Hesselbein vs. Ruth Ann Schoer
Dane County District 9 hugs the Beltline on the far west side of Madison and west Middleton. The district includes a lot of the county's recent development and potential for much more, particularly in north Middleton along Airport Road.
County Board Countdown: Dist. 5 -- Wyndham Manning vs. Conor O'Hagan
Students who run for political office are always accused of trying to pad their resumes. But you can't make that charge about Wyndham Manning and Conor O'Hagan, the two students who want to replace Supv. Ashok Kumar. Both have already been active in their communities.
Blaska's Blog says Heckuva Job, Brow ... Barry
We can't catch the "underwear bomber." But we can catch a Guantanamo Base full of terrorists whom The Current Occupant now wants to repatriate to Illinois. (You think Door County is crowded in the summer now!) Or try in New York superior court. (Only if Jack McCoy is prosecuting.) Or return to Yemen. (One in seven “graduates” of Gitmo have returned to jihadism.)
Blaska's Blog: The Capital Times -- A good time was had by all
Had the most wonderful time chez Dave Callender and his lovely bride, Eloi, Saturday night, on the beautiful far-southwest side of Madison. The beer was kept cold on the deck overlooking the southlands on an abnormally cool night and it poured sweet and clear. It was a very good night.
Live-blogging the 2006 general election in Madison and beyond
1:10 a.m.: The race for attorney general is tightening again. While Republican candidate J.B. Van Hollen took a five-digit lead for awhile as the returns came in, the margin between him and Kathleen Falk is now back to a mere 3,000 votes with 90% of precincts reporting.
