Blaska's Blog hunkers down
You know autumn is here by the vibrant colors and high temperatures in the 40s. Expecting a killing frost any evening now. The current cold, wet spell heralds what I grew up on the farm knowing as Indian Summer but in Madison these days we call Indigenous Peoples’ Summer.
Muramoto opening The Haze American + Asian Bar-B-Que on King
Kushi Bar Muramoto, the most casual of the three local restaurants of chef Shinji Muramoto, closed at 106 King St. at the end of August, but already the space is being revamped for a new casual Asian-American concept restaurant.
Obama terrible choice for Nobel Peace Prize
I heard it on the radio coming into work this morning: Barack Obama has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. It was on the Stephanie Miller show, so I assumed it was a joke. I wish it had been.
Beer Here: Satisfaction Jacksin Double IPA from Ale Asylum
No big secret that the folks over at Ale Asylum turn out some great beer. They also have a sense of humor that doesn't go unnoticed among the faithful. The Madison brewpub's newest beer, Satisfaction Jacksin, has a name that might remind you of a garage band from Sheboygan or an '80s porn star. And if it does, you're correct on both accounts.

The Week[end]: October 9-11, 2009
The Wisconsin Book Festival is the main event this weekend, but there is much more to be found between its covers. The fun includes: productions of Forever Plaid, Vin, and Little Women: The Musical; performances by the Milwaukee Symphony, the WCO, Dance Wisconsin, and The Capitol Steps; a talk with Stephanie Miller and Bill Press; and, more live music by Mambo Blue, Over the Rhine, MC Chris, Crocodiles, Drunk Drivers, EOTO, Fortune & Glory, Kelly DeHaven with Gerri DiMaggio and Marilyn Fisher, They Might Be Giants, Gabriel Iglesias, and Eric Hutchinson.
Ride the Drive Madison returns in tandem for 2010
Anyone who enjoyed Madison's inaugural Ride the Drive stands to enjoy it twice as much in 2010. When they gathered last night at the extensively renovated Mansion Hill Inn, now owned by Trek Bicycles and Trek Hospitality, those in attendance heard Mayor Dave Cieslewicz announce tentative plans to shift into a higher gear and hold the event not once next year, but twice.
Isthmus Band to Band Combat is back!
Last disputed in 2003, the Isthmus online music contest Band to Band Combat aims to reward not necessarily the best band in Madison, but the one that can get out the vote and win people over with their sound over four rounds of voting and a final competition in front of a live audience.
MadTracks: 'Exorcist' by The Antiprism
It's just about showtime on a Wednesday night at the Frequency, and the stage room contains only a few folks with pints ... and a band dressed in hooded black capes, forbidding sunglasses and a bit of dark makeup.
Althouse commenters: Gays are perverted fudge packers
Hat tip to Atlantic blogger Andrew Sullivan, who quotes vile anti-gay comments on the blog of Ann Althouse, the Robert W. & Irma M. Arthur-Bascom Professor at the University of Wisconsin Law School.
Dane County Farmers' Market: Green's Pleasant Springs Orchard
Green's Pleasant Springs Orchard offers fresh apples, apple cider, lettuce, and tomatoes this fall in its 29th year at the Dane County Farmers' Market.

Federal funds, the Cardinal Bar, tribute bands, and fall beers in the October 9 issue of Isthmus
What can you find in this week's Isthmus? Highlights from the latest issue follow.
Madame Fromage: Menage from Carr Valley Cheese
Lately, I've been on a quest for the perfect desk cheese. That's right, a cheese I can eat at work when I'm lunching with email -- a cheese that goes with apples and pretzels or whatever's handy, a cheese that won't stink up the mini-fridge but that isn't bland. Well, here's my star: Carr Valley's Menage.
Keep court records system open
Neutering WCCA (commonly and incorrectly called CCAP) would be a boon for private providers who charge for access to more complete databases, where existing controls about accuracy cannot be enforced.
Madison Etsy explorations: A Handmade Portland
I have a fairly large jewelry collection; consequently if I am going to expand my collection the piece needs to be unusual. Ordinary just won't do. Classic hoops are not going to excite me, neither are plain gold studs. Luckily, Etsy is ripe with unique shops and A Handmade Portland is no exception.
Wilmington on DVD: Chinatown, Anvil!, A Hard Day's Night, My Life in Ruins
No matter what you think of Roman Polanski and his current arrest and extradition problems, the director's 1974 private eye classic Chinatown is still a masterpiece of film neo-noir.

Blaska's Blog is anti-social(ist)
The last place I expected to see some good common sense is in an Isthmus movie review. But Marjorie Baumgarten, an unfamiliar byline to me, holds Michael Moore’s latest picture show, Capitalism: A Love Story, in the contempt it has so richly earned.
Wisconsin Book Festival 2009: Marty McConnell speaks
Marty McConnell is not for the faint of heart: The spoken-word artist's performance poetry blows through the border checkpoints of faith, freedom, gender, humanity, integrity and sex in ways that are frequently beautiful, sometimes transgressive and, in her most exhilarating work, both at once.
MadTracks: 'It's Our Time' by Fortune and Glory
While the name of local pop-punk five-piece Fortune and Glory conjures up images of war heroes and perhaps pirates, their song "It's Our Time," off of their about-to-be-released debut EP S/T, is more about partying than pillaging.

The Week: October 5-8, 2009
The printed word and the communities it creates lead the week with the opening of the Wisconsin Book Festival. The calendar also includes: a talk by David Carter; and, live music by The Most Supreme Republic, The Butthole Surfers, WHY?, Rebelution, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Pepper with illScarlett, Ghostland Observatory, Portugal. The Man, and Koo Koo Kanga Roo.
A Book A Week: Finding Nouf by Zoe Ferraris
I keep coming across these mysteries that take place in exotic locales. This was another one, set in Saudi Arabia. A teenage girl called Nouf goes missing and eventually turns up dead.
Marxism for wee folks in Revolt of the Beavers by University Theatre
What do you get when you take a 1937 Federal Theatre Project production for children about oppressed beavers, then toss in some rubber teeth, galoshes falling from the sky, a tinsel-bedazzled robot, a Black Eyed Peas song and messages of social justice and environmentalism?
DeMain and Serkin are not quite in sync at Madison Symphony Orchestra's opener
Friday night in Overture Hall, the Madison Symphony Orchestra opened its 2009-10 season with a distinguished guest, Peter Serkin, one of our finest pianists.
