Blaska's Blog is divisive
Missouri native Rush Limbaugh joins a syndicate seeking to purchase the woeful St. Louis Rams pro football team and you’d think the Klan was burning a cross on the south lawn of the White House.
Two South American ambassadors to speak at UW this month
Heraldo Muñoz should probably be dead right now. In the fall of 1973, Muñoz was an idealistic socialist in Chile, hiding out with his American wife as the military searched for dissidents to "disappear" as Augusto Pinochet tightened his grip on power.
Beer Here: Painted Ladies Pumpkin Spice Ale from Tyranena Brewing
It's the time of year when jolly orange gourds start appearing on steps and porches. But pumpkins are not just for jack-o-lanterns. Stop by your favorite beer shelves, and you'll find pumpkins in the six-packs. My choice when it comes to pumpkin pie in a pint glass comes from Tyranena Brewing.

The Week[end]: October 16-18, 2009
It's Homecoming at the University of Wisconsin, but this weekend offers plenty to accompany the tailgating. The calendar includes: Madison Open Art Studios; a gale of live music from Five Finger Death Punch, the Madison Bach Musicians, Keller Williams, Hot Buttered Rum, Solid Gold with Sugar & Gold, St. Vincent, Birds of Avalon, Ari Herstand, the Festival Choir of Madison, Gossip, Monte Montgomery, Ghetto Division, His & Her Vanities, and the Poster Children; and, finally, the wild menagerie of Jungle Jack Hanna.
Blaska's Blog salutes the Party of Government
An economics professor from Georgia Tech once told an annual National Counties Association convention in Washington D.C. that a president dealing with the economy is like the rodeo bull rider: lurching and sprawling for 10 seconds before he is thrown off and trampled then applauded for his wonderful job of riding the bull.
MadTracks: 'Hits Like Hail' by His & Her Vanities
Many parents of infants are ready to pass out -- and understandably so -- after tending to their kid all day. But when Terrin and Ricky Riemer put their baby in his crib for the evening, they didn't pass out: They started to rock out.
The Business Forum announces ATHENA Young Professional Award finalists
In its second year, the ATHENA Young Professional Award honors emerging community leaders whose professional and personal achievements make them ideal role models for young women.
Bawdy laughs in Bricks Theatre debut An Adult Evening with Shel Silverstein
I approached the Bricks Theatre's first-ever production, An Adult Evening with Shel Silverstein, with two questions: Would it tarnish my innocent childhood memories? And more important, would it be funny? The answers are "no" and "yes," respectively.

Wilmington on DVD: Natural Born Killers, Drag Me to Hell, Gaumont, The Proposal
Natural Born Killers, Oliver Stone's mad-dog-violent "love on the run" neo-noir, one of the most controversial movies of the '90s, may get better and better every time you see it in a new release. But that doesn't mean it still couldn't use some improvement.

Proposed Wisconsin beer tax hike meets opposition at Capitol hearing
State Rep. Terese Berceau brought seven six-packs of Wisconsin brewed beer to the hearing, saying that the beer tax would increase less than three cents a bottle, an amount she doesn't think will affect the average beer drinker much.
The doughnuts of autumn
Normally I can take doughnuts or I can leave them. But in the fall, I'd much rather take them. The frosting-leaden glazed doughnuts that are the stock-in-trade of supermarket pastry cases are left behind in autumn for the promise of fresh apple cider doughnuts.

Blaska's Blog believes in miracles
I hear that Pope Benedict XVI is already declaring Barack Obama a saint. No, the guy is not even Catholic but the Pope hopes he will become one. (Pa-DUMM!)
Madison eats agenda: Local Harvest, Autumn Harvest Fest, and Dells on Tap
The coming week, in events that get to your heart through your stomach.
Madison Music Scene and Heard: Wheels on Fire, Wilco, Halfway Hootenanny
Athens, Ohio's Wheels on Fire makes a first Madison appearance on Thursday, Oct. 15 at the Frequency. What makes this show unmissable for garage pop fans is the trio of Madison bands on the bill: The Hussy, The Honey Slides and The Hemlines.
Kevin Henkes, Nancy Ekholm Burkert and other acclaimed illustrators discuss the art of children’s books at the Wisconsin Book Festival
To judge by the crush of people at the James Watrous Gallery Sunday, you’d think a famous rock band was giving a press conference. But no, it was just a half-dozen articulate artists discussing the ways in which they entrance children with images on paper.

The Week: October 12-15, 2009
Fall is getting chilly pretty fast, so heat things up this week with a busy calendar that includes: the debut of the Bricks Theatre with An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein and a production of Souvenir; performances by the Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Company and Gallagher; and, live music by Jolie Holland, Dinosaur Jr., Po' Girl, Imani Winds, and Rain Machine.
CTM and Four Seasons Theatre's Little Women is good enough
Children's Theater of Madison and Four Seasons Theatre had a challenge in front of them as they co-produced Little Women: The Musical as the opener for both of their seasons. To the credit of a hardworking cast and crew, they make the best of it.
Jane Hamilton and David Rhodes read to a capacity audience at the Wisconsin Book Festival
Upstairs at Overture, a book festival volunteer herding people asked me, "Are you here for Jane Hamilton?" Well, if the truth were told, I was out in the windy cold on Saturday night to hear David Rhodes.
Taut storytelling in Mercury Players Theatre's smart Vin
Often when teens are portrayed in film or on stage, the writing can seem stilted and false. This is not the case with the new Mercury Players Theatre production Vin.
Madison Theatre Guild's Forever Plaid is a musical delight
Madison Theatre Guild's production of Forever Plaid wraps audience and performers alike in its fuzzy comfort.
WCO performs splendid opener to its post-strike season
How wonderful to approach this new season with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra thankfully freed of the labor disputes that disrupted the last one. Friday night at Overture Center's Capitol Theater, there was a palpable mood of festivity as the reinvigorated ensemble offered its first concert of the season.
A Book A Week: Mother on Fire by Sandra Tsing Loh
Sandra Tsing Loh is a writer, performance artist and public radio commentator. I don't hear her much on radio but I do read her pieces in the Atlantic. I’ve also never seen any of her one-woman shows but would sure like to. In 2008 she published Mother on Fire, a memoir about her life in Los Angeles, framed around her search for an appropriate school for her kindergarten-age daughter.
