A Book A Week: The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff
Some books just take longer than a week to read. David Ebershoff's The 19th Wife took more than two weeks, partly because it's long, and partly because some of it is a slog. Nevertheless it's an interesting book and worth reading for the 85% non-sloggish bits.
Beer Here: Spetsnaz Stout from the Grumpy Troll
For the past several weeks I've found myself on a malt quest -- searching for that perfect pint of flavor with tones of caramel and chocolate. These beers are often deep golden, brown or even stark black. Last weekend, in my desire to explore the tastes of the season, I ended up in Mount Horeb with a dark and rich, sweet and silky stout in hand.
The frights are funny in Strollers Theatre's Musical Comedy Murders of 1940
Halloween weekend seems like a fitting time for a local theater group to open a mystery like The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940. Like the holiday itself, the Strollers Theatre production of this whodunit is more about fun than fear. As the German maid Helsa is throttled and dragged off in the first scene, what ensues are giggles, not gasps.

The Week[end]: October 30 - November 1, 2009
Halloween and Madison are nigh synonymous, with the big shindigs like Freakfest, Dane101's Freakin' Halloweekend, Night of the Dead, HalloQueen, the Halloween Mustache Masquerade, and the Frequency Halloween Party only scratching the surface of celebration. This weekend offers much more, though, including: productions of Thaïs, The Stops, The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, and Drakula; a James Gill exhibit at the Chazen, a Ron Dayne book signing, and Opera Up Close; and, a monster lineup of live music by Ben Folds, Ludacris, the Pro Arte Quartet, the Lucas Cates Band, Mad Trucker Gone Mad, and Downtown Brown.
Madison collaborative reporting project All Together Now: An overview
As the two-week run date for the inaugural project of All Together Now winds to a close, it's time to take stock of what was achieved. To do, in other words, a little shouting.
For Crepe Sake! food cart serves breakfast and lunch on UW-Madison campus
Your mother always told you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. For Crepe Sake! is dedicated to serving breakfast foods for the on-the-go college student. The owners have a child in college and the idea for the cart was inspired by that -- and a family recipe and a long-standing Sunday breakfast tradition. The cart parks at University Avenue and Charter Street.
Voting for Isthmus Band to Band Combat starts Thursday!
Warning: Those expecting an effort to define Madison's finest performing musical ensemble should look elsewhere. Isthmus Band to Band Combat, which returns after a six-year hiatus, attempts only to expose our readers to a lot of local music.

Edgewater revisions may be too little, too late
As a sign of how quickly Hammes Sports and Entertainment needs to move, the developer wants to take the new project designs, located in city and national historic districts, to the city Plan Commission Nov. 2, and to the Urban Design Commission Nov. 4.

Fringe Foods watches Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre World episode in Wisconsin
Food critic, chef, and Minnesotan Andrew Zimmern has been revealing the strangest of foreign foods to American television viewers since his show, Bizarre Foods, debuted on the Travel Channel in February 2007. He has expanded his focus to culture as well as cuisine with Bizarre World, and on Tuesday night we were treated to his trip to Wisconsin.
MadTracks: 'That's That' by Mad Trucker Gone Mad
Mad Trucker Gone Mad's name might sound redundant, but it's a fitting description for music that starts out one shade of crazy and morphs into white-hot insanity. This is especially true of their latest love song, "That's That," the third track on their new album, Born To Be a Trucker.
Wilmington on DVD: Il Divo, Z, Sam Fuller, Ice Age 3, Whatever Works, Orphan
Veteran Italian actor Toni Servillo's craggy wise-hood face -- as impassive and immobile as a dentist staring into your mouth or a panther regarding its prey -- is at the center of a jaw-dropping whirlpool of bloody events and political crime, portrayed or exposed in Il Divo, subtitled The Extraordinary Life of Giulio Andreotti.

Barbeque and bánh mì lunches at The Haze
The new Muramoto restaurant The Haze, replacing the Kushi Bar at 106 King St., has already generated a lot of interest among local restaurant talkers. The fusion barbeque joint offers dual American and Asian flavor options for the meats, which include half and full racks of ribs, brisket, chicken, pork, and sausage. Sides, both standard and seasonal, are on the menu, along with a couple of salads. Here's a first look at the lunch specials.
Tales from Planet Earth 2009 film fest returns with broad community ambitions
This year's expanded edition of Tales from Planet Earth represents a significant leap in ambition. Driven by the strong attendance of two years ago, plans for the 2009 festival have grown to set almost double the number of films on a cornerstone theme of "Justice." Tales 2 also engages in close partnerships with nine community organizations.

Sexy nurses, swine flu, Michael Jackson and Twilight vampires top Madison’s list of favorite Halloween costumes
On the Sunday before Halloween, the toothpaste and aspirin aisles are deserted at cozy Mallatt’s Pharmacy, 3506 Monroe St. But the costume and makeup aisles are jam-packed with shoppers looking for the perfect bloody scar or fake teeth. As crowded as it is today, owner Mike Flint says it will be even harder to move around the store in the next week. “I’ll be at the point where I have to throw merchandise to people.”

Unrepentant Red: Clarence Kailin looks back on a lifetime of fighting the good fight
Clarence Kailin died Sunday, October 25, at the age of 95. The Madisonian was a lifelong socialist, union supporter and activist for peace and social justice. He was also one of the last surviving veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, a group of volunteers from the United States who fought with the International Brigades against fascist forces in the Spanish Civil War in the late '30s.
Clarence Kailin, now dead as well as red
I'm pretty sure Clarence Kailin would have gotten a kick out of that headline. He was, on the occasions our paths crossed over the last two decades or so, a remarkably warm individual, with a twinkle in his eye. Kailin was serious about the cause of peace and justice -- so serious he risked his life in its pursuit -- but he also enjoyed himself, and liked to have a good laugh. Being an activist wasn't just work; it was fun.

Marc Stroobandt wants you to drink your dinner
The time has finally come. Beer has officially been invited to sit at the adults' table, and the coordination of beer/food pairings is emphasized more now than ever. Those of us who tire of our wine-drinking friends constantly tossing around "oaky" this and "tannins" that can at long last stand up and say, "this beer would go great with a nice steak au poivre."
