2009 Wisconsin Film Festival, Day Three: The wisdom of crowds by Linda Falkenstein on 04/05/09 at 9:00 am | The campus seemed a little empty Saturday as I hopped from film to film, all west of the Library Mall. All three films were about art and artists: Chuck Close, Between the Folds, and Immortal Cupboard: In Search of Lorine Niedecker. The greatest concentration of excitement was at the showing of Between the Folds at the Chazen Museum, and the auditorium was sold out, with ushers hunting down every last seat. |

Vinyl Cave -- Incontinopia by The Mystery Girls by Bob Koch on 04/04/09 at 8:00 am | It's been five years since Green Bay's young masters of bluesy skronk, The Mystery Girls, released their second long-player to a global audience through Los Angeles-based In the Red Records. The last show I remember them playing in Madison was more than three years ago. Where have you gone, Mystery Girls? |

2009 Wisconsin Film Festival, Day Two: 'We Like It Here' by Dean Robbins on 04/03/09 at 11:33 pm | Stephen Jarchow, distributor of Oscar-winning Departures, is impressed with the Wisconsin Film Festival’s interest in foreign films. "Madison is a sophisticated film town. It’s one of the best cities for foreign films in the U.S., outside the major markets." |

Madison coffee shops defy national trend by Clare Milliken on 04/03/09 at 1:30 pm | "Business is up since last year," says Ryan Baughn, training director of Ancora Coffee Roasters on King Street. "Where people are spending their dollar is looked at with a lot more detail, but I think people still want a treat." |

There’s much more fun to be found around town this weekend, though, including: the Wunk Sheek Pow Wow, UW Science Expeditions, and an Etsy Trunk Show; the opening of a Wisconsin Watercolor Society show; a production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) and performance by Doug Stanhope; and live music by the MSO, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Lotus, The Cemetery Improvement Society with Revolving Doors, Wavves, O Trem Dos Tres, and Heiruspecs. |

2009 Wisconsin Film Festival, Day One: Recession proof? Waterproof? by David Medaris on 04/03/09 at 9:07 am | From the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art's rooftop sculpture garden, the sight was impressive -- people dashing across State Street at mid-block between the cross-traffic of bikes and Madison Metro buses, and growing numbers of pedestrians crossing the Dayton and Johnson street intersections as if drawn by some cinematic gravity. |

But one element that remains tried and true -- and one without which roller derby could hardly function -- is the officials. |

A meal at Nick's Restaurant with the Eating in Madison A-Z folks by Linda Falkenstein on 04/02/09 at 11:00 am | First off, we ended up at Nick's at what is possibly the most un-Nick's-like time to end up at Nick's: 5 p.m. on a Monday. Nick's is more of an 11 p.m.-on-a-Friday kind of place in my mind, probably an idea that's leftover from when I was an undergraduate. Nick's looks just like it did back then, except now you can actually see what it looks like because there's no haze of smoke. |

Blaska's Blog: Here's mud in your eye by David Blaska on 04/01/09 at 2:00 pm | The Capital Times has endorsed The Kathleen for re-election as protectoress in chief of Dane County’s lands with high-water tables. Surely the bullfrogs are croaking their approval. ("Rib-it. Rib-it.") Also: Alder Thuy seeks an earlier curfew. |

Searching for resolutions in Cruel and Unusual: The Culture of Punishment in America by Anne-Marie Cusac by Linda Falkenstein on 04/01/09 at 1:00 pm | Now is an advantageous time for the publication of Cruel and Unusual: The Culture of Punishment in America. As a country, we are once again at a crossroads with regard to our attitude toward punishment. But as author Anne-Marie Cusac shows, the nation has long flip-flopped on this issue. |

Wilmington on DVD: Slumdog Millionaire, Danton, Il Generale Della Rovere, and An American in Paris by Mike Wilmington on 04/01/09 at 10:00 am | Slumdog Millionaire is a dancing, crackling shockwave of a movie, an incandescent, visually explosive tale of poverty, wealthy, love and crime in contemporary India. It's a pulse-racer, a technically exhilarating movie that uses many of the modern devices and tricks of cinema, infuses them with a wild, rushing energy and -- without sacrificing social insight or dramatic depth -- ends up all but blowing you out of your seat. |

1855 Saloon and Grill makes its own history in Cottage Grove by Robin Shepard on 03/31/09 at 3:00 pm | Cottage Grove was once a rest stop for the stagecoach or trains heading into Madison from the east. Today, it's more of a bedroom suburb, about a 15-minute drive east of the isthmus. Recently, its downtown has undergone a bit of a renaissance. The trailhead of the Glacial Drumlin State Trail starts (or ends) right in the middle of town. And right next to the trailhead, the 1855 Saloon and Grill is establishing its own place as a local dining spot that attracts visitors who like to venture out of Madison. |

Basford's Spin City: Blaska vs. Mistele! by Mike Basford on 03/31/09 at 12:00 pm | In one corner, you have a tried-and-true conservative leader who, with the united backing of the county's center-right, gave Kathleen Falk a real run for her money in the County Executive's race. In the other corner, you have Nancy Mistele. |

MadTracks -- 'Sixth Severence' by The Cemetery Improvement Society by Jessica Steinhoff on 03/31/09 at 11:00 am | The Cemetery Improvement Society as a name makes sense when you consider Marc Claggett and Russell Paul's fascination with zany, self-directed projects, which include wacky online photo-curation efforts, an ongoing arm wrestling and ice sculpture competition and, in the case Claggett, a new label called Analogy Records. |

A Book a Week: When Will There Be Good News? by Kate Atkinson by Becky Holmes on 03/30/09 at 5:00 pm | I have a crush on Kate Atkinson. Her books are so clever, so original, so unexpected. They crackle with wit and sparkle with insight. Her characters live on in your head, continuing to make their mordant observations for months after you have finished reading about them. I just can't get enough of them, and like a good relationship, the longer I have known Atkinson, the better she gets. |

Strange little gals in Falling Girls by University Theatre by Jennifer A. Smith on 03/30/09 at 12:00 pm | Blue's Clues Live! it ain't. Falling Girls, the latest production from University Theatre, offers an avant-garde approach to theater for the very young. While it is deliberately short on conventional storytelling, it's an oddly compelling experience that last Saturday afternoon kept young audience members -- and this adult -- fully engaged. |

Mistele goes overboard in attacking Falk on 911 snafus by Bill Lueders on 03/30/09 at 9:43 am | I'm not going to tell you how to vote in the race for Dane County executive, or any other electoral contest. I don't think that's my role. I'm glad that Isthmus does not endorse candidates. I'm comfortable with the credo Vince O'Hern imparted my first week on the job, 23 years ago: "Our mission is to inform and not persuade." |

In the '60s, one of the most talented young groups was family band The Cowsills. |
