Beer Here -- Billiards Brown from the Great Dane Hilldale by Robin Shepard on 04/10/09 at 3:00 pm | The Great Dane at Hilldale Mall is back up and brewing again after a couple months of remodeling. Patrons will find the main bar unchanged, but there is now a second bar and mezzanine in the new half of the building, along with more restaurant seating and an expanded game room complete with pool tables. Like many fans of the brewpub, I decided to venture out to see the new digs. I was also curious about what moving the brewing equipment might mean for the beer, including a new offering named Billiards Brown. |

MadTracks -- 'Armageddon' by Ashley Daniels by Jessica Steinhoff on 04/10/09 at 1:00 pm | Whether or not they're religious, most people don’t take the word "Armageddon" very lightly. For some it's the prophesied site of the final showdown between God and Satan; for others it's a term reserved for any number of horrific events with wide-reaching consequences. |

A Book a Week: The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher by Kate Summerscale by Becky Holmes on 04/09/09 at 6:00 pm | Early versions of crime and mystery stories were appearing in Scotland and England in the late 1840s, and Edgar Allan Poe created the first fictional detective, Auguste Dupin, in 1841 in The Murders in the Rue Morgue. But it was England's national obsession with the Road Hill House murder that really got the ball rolling. |

Wisconsin Film Festival announces 2009 audience awards, attendance up once again by Kenneth Burns on 04/09/09 at 5:00 pm | What is Meg Hamel's most vivid memory of this year's festival? It's the audience members who enthusiastically sang along with the Wisconsin Film Festival trailer. That kind of participation is a good sign. "It's hard for any festival to create a trailer people won't mock," she says. |

MTV lets UW-Madison students film themselves in College Life by Dean Robbins on 04/09/09 at 12:30 pm | MTV has tapped eight underclassmen from the University of Wisconsin-Madison for an experiment in reality TV. Rather than trailing the kids with a camera crew, the network gave them their own cameras. They spent several months documenting their lives, and MTV has assembled the footage in a show called College Life. It premieres at 9:30 p.m. on Monday, April 13. |

QQ Asian Buffet is new on Madison's North side by Linda Falkenstein on 04/09/09 at 11:00 am | When it comes to eating at Chinese buffets, which tend to great similarity, I have a few basic standards. Are the appetizers good, not soggy? Are the appetizers the only thing that's good? Can I get some decent vegetables besides from the American salad bar? Are the Chinese main dishes recognizable Chinese entrees, or are they pretty much meat with a sauce? |

At the state Capitol today, lawmakers announced plans to introduce a new bill to license commercial dog breeders in Wisconsin. The Commercial Dog breeders Licensure Bill will require all dog breeders selling over 25 dogs a year to be licensed. |

Wilmington on DVD: Doubt, The Last Metro, The Day The Earth Stood Still, Yes Man by Mike Wilmington on 04/08/09 at 3:00 pm | Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman, playing a gorgon nun and a progressive priest, battling in a Bronx parochial school in 1964, stage a classic actor's duel in Doubt -- director-writer John Patrick Shanley's tense, humane adaptation of his Tony-winning play. And they made it an obvious but deserving candidate for 2008's prestigious film acting prizes. |

Madison Etsy explorations: Erin Bowe Artisan Jewelry by Megan Larson on 04/08/09 at 1:00 pm | I took a metalsmithing jewelry class in high school. My 16-year-old self had this fantasy of discovering an inner bohemian with a raw talent for creating gorgeous pieces of jewelry that everyone would just die to wear. But like many teenage expectations, mine failed to live up to the dream I had created in my mind. |

Beer Here -- Peruvian Morning Imperial Stout from Central Waters Brewing by Robin Shepard on 04/07/09 at 3:00 pm | Peruvian Morning begins its life as an imperial stout, actually made from the popular Satin Solstice brewed by Central Waters. The addition of fair trade coffee and fermentation in bourbon barrels changes it dramatically, though, making the beer very distinctive. "We are home brewers at heart and we really like to be creative, experiment in trying something different," says Anello Mollica, brewmaster and co-owner of Central Waters. |

The loons among us: They're flocking to Lake Monona by Diane Schwartz on 04/07/09 at 12:00 pm | There's a loon convention at Monona Terrace. Not the people kind, the bird kind. Last Saturday, April 4, I counter more than 30 loons from the bike path along John Nolen Drive. Why so many when past years produced just a handful of migrants? |

The Spin City Guide to Spring Election Day by Mike Basford on 04/07/09 at 9:31 am | Election Day, to me, is like Christmas and the Super Bowl all jammed together. But these days, the Super Bowl is more like Chargers/49ers instead of Steelers/Cowboys and all the parties have you pay at the bar. |

Fringe Foods: An Easter egg hunt at Brocach, The Old Fashioned, and Muramoto by Kyle Nabilcy on 04/06/09 at 2:00 pm | There's one symbol of easterosity -- a concept I'm using in the spirit of Stephen Colbert's "truthiness" -- that crosses almost all demographic lines, and that's the egg. |

André Watts brings fireworks, delicacy to Madison Symphony Orchestra performance by John W. Barker on 04/06/09 at 1:00 pm | I have long had reservations about André Watts: undeniable technique, but, I felt, a certain superficiality in repertoire and interpretation. His latest guest appearance with the Madison Symphony Orchestra in Overture Hall last weekend swept aside past doubts, however. |

Basford's Spin City: Tick... Tick... Tick.... by Mike Basford on 04/06/09 at 10:02 am | Many years ago, I knew an elected official from the downtown area who will remain nameless. He was in a tough primary election fight and was seriously feeling the pressure. So one night in late January, he went out with his campaign manager. They walked out to the middle of a frozen Lake Mendota and the official, facing a bracing wind, screamed his lungs out. |

2009 Wisconsin Film Festival, Day Four: As the snow flies by Ellen Meany on 04/06/09 at 8:48 am | Nothing more Wisco than a blizzard in April, but clutching a handful of festival tickets, we bundle up and get moving. We like it here, remember? The snow never materializes in any significant way, but birds and buildings do, memes that have popped up in all the movies we've seen this weekend. |
