Vinyl Cave -- Without Rhyme or Reason/Anything You Choose by Spanky and Our Gang
The band takes the concept of careful sequencing used on their previous album and really runs with it this time, as the songs on both sides segue from one to the next by crossfades, incidental recordings or other short interlude pieces, making each side somewhat like the self-contained halves of a single. In fact, I've never actually known which side of the album is supposed to be played first; the sides are labeled "A" and "1," and it works equally well starting with either side.
Midge Miller, insider and agitator, dies at 86
Former State Rep. Midge Miller defied the political status quo and defined what it meant to be a "West Side Liberal." Her death Friday morning at age 86 ended a life noteworthy for its accomplishments and remarkable for its generosity of spirit.
Midge Miller, trailblazer
In life, Midge Miller was among that vanguard of Wisconsin women who could claim the moral lineage of Belle Case La Follette. In death, she is enshrined in that sisterhood's pantheon.
Try it, you'll like Eat Me by Kenny Shopsin and Carolynn Carreno
I'd been curious about this cookbook since it was published last fall. Shopsin, formerly the proprietor of a general store in Greenwich Village along with his wife, Eve, transformed the store into a restaurant in 1983 after their rent was raised to the point where "we could no longer pay [it] by selling groceries."
The Week on Forum: Tea-baggers, socialists, pirates, and Vicki McKenna
Forons were all a-twitter about politics this week, lambasting Presidents and ripping into political media. Leave it to tea bag jokes to cut the tension.

Today's image titled “Badger Eyes Are Everywhere but Apparently Have Some Blind Spots” was photographed by Peter Patau.
Beer Here -- Coon Rock Cream Ale from Lake Louie Brewing
A beer enthusiast cannot merely live on big robust dark brews all the time. Those looking for a lighter beer, yet with solid flavor, would do well by picking up a six pack of Coon Rock Cream Ale made by Lake Louie Brewing. Many craft beer fans around Wisconsin know the story of the brewery's name, a quarter-acre pond on the Arena farm belonging to owner and brewmaster Tom Porter, both of which were once owned by his uncle Louie.
A Book a Week: The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
Jeannette Walls grew up in extreme poverty with an alcoholic father and a co-dependent mother. Why is her story unique? Because Walls escaped from her toxic environment and against all odds got a Barnard education and a good job as a journalist in New York City.
Dining, planetary hope, and composers John Harbison and Ben Johnston in the April 17 edition of Isthmus
What can you find in this week's Isthmus? Highlights from the latest issue follow.
Madison Snaps -- April 16, 2009
Today's image titled “Looking Down Town” was photographed by Craig Wilson.
MadTracks -- 'Loaded All Day' by The Von Ehrics
"Loaded All Day" by The Von Ehrics has one of those melodies that would work just as well in a '60s protest-folk setting as a punk-flavored country tune. Maybe it's just the catchy chorus, but there seems to be a gravity to the song that's reminiscent of something reflective to the point of being spiritual, kind of like an old Joan Baez song.
A Madison 'Tea Party': Thousands steep over Obama on Capitol Square
There were plenty of ordinary Americans at the event. And they were genuinely angry -- angry about their tax bills, upset with the economy and the recent federal bailouts of the banks and auto manufacturers.

There will be plenty for food lovers to chew on at Isthmus Green Day, Saturday, April 25, at Monona Terrace.
View more photos of tea party protesters in Madison
It was impossible to take photos of every single sign that showed up near the King Street entrance of the Wisconsin State Capitol for Wednesday's "tea party" demonstration, but we tried.
View photos of the Wisconsin 'Tea Party' in Madison
Capitol Square in downtown Madison buzzed at midday Wedneday with the cheers and chants of a "Tea Party" broadly protesting government tax policies as well as the policies of the Obama administration and the Doyle administration in Wisconsin.
Wilmington on DVD: The Reader, Pete Seeger, Happy Together, Pre-Code Hollywood
Some movies are quintessential Oscar-nominee candidates, and so is The Reader, which helped deliver the 2008 "Best Actress" statuette to Kate Winslet. Not that she didn't deserve it, but it's a very obvious choice: Winslet plays Hanna, a tragic German anti-heroine who experiences ecstasy and agony during a forbidden romance with a younger Jewish boy, all set against a Holocaust background.
Madison Snaps -- April 15, 2009
Today's image titled “couple outside the Cardinal Cafe & Bar” was photographed by M.T. Sullivan.
When God closes a restaurant, he opens... another restaurant?
There have been plenty of changes of late in the Madison restaurant landscape. And while some spots seem resigned to being empty, there seems to be no difficulty getting new ventures into other prime locations.

A conversation with physicist Michio Kaku
Physicist Michio Kaku of the City University of New York studies string field theory at his day job. He's also written a series of books aimed at a general audience that aim to explain the real mind-blowing aspects of physics -- worm holes, parallel universes, hyperspace. In his latest, Physics of the Impossible he explores the physics behind all the neat sci-fi stuff that's normally dismissed as impossible, like invisibility, UFOs, psychokinesis, and time travel.
Madison Bach Musicians perform magnificent 'St. Matthews Passion'
Last spring, Trevor Stephenson's Madison Bach Musicians climbed the musical slopes with the B-minor Mass, period style. This spring they reached a summit with the "St. Matthew Passion." I can recall past Madison performances of the work in 1963 and 1980, but this was the very first here to follow period conventions and instrumentation.

Making responsible use of public information: Bill Lueders on journalists and private eyes
Most people don't do what we do. They don't make open records requests or look through court files or obtain corporate reports from the state Department of Financial Institutions. Worse, they don't understand why or how we do what we do. My purpose here tonight is to peg this as a problem, and suggest a solution.
Vinyl Cave -- Reflections in a Crystal Wind by Richard and Mimi Farina
More than 40 years since his untimely death, writer and musician Richard Farina's life seems almost like a folk tale itself -- he did some wild roving in his short time on the planet.
Blaska's Blog: The don is told
Speak up, Ruben. Spit it out, Mamoulian. E? Eeee? … Are you trying to say “e-lection?” Oh, that’s right! There was an election this week. Well, dammit, boy, give me the news. I see, like Tom Hagen, you had to take a drink first.
