Basford's Spin City: Something wicked this way comes by Mike Basford on 05/14/09 at 2:34 pm | Wherever Bud Selig goes, skies darken and rain falls. Crabgrass grows in the fields. Apple pies and Crackerjacks sour and babies wail. Bats go dead and pitchers blow out rotator cuffs. Peanuts get too salty and beer becomes too prohibitively expensive to quench the thirst. |

Now my old boss Dave Zweifel, a lifelong proponent of government as the employer of first resort, has jumped aboard the "right-sizing" bandwagon -- even though said bandwagon seems to be stuck in neutral. |

Thanks for the Memories, George by Mike Loew falls flat by Linda Falkenstein on 05/13/09 at 1:00 pm | Now we’re post-Bush. It is yet another measure of the Bush 2 presidency that it has squelched humor in its wake -- humor writing lies with the economy, struggling for a toe hold. |

Beilke: Steve Chapman columns fail to enhance Wisconsin State Journal by Dustin Beilke on 05/13/09 at 11:01 am | Anyone who read Steve Chapman's column in Sunday's Wisconsin State Journal opinion section has a new understanding of the term "willful ignorance." Still, the Chicago Tribune syndicated columnist Chapman -- whose offerings the State Journal uses every Sunday even though its space is increasingly scarce and much better fare is readily available -- outdid himself in "Empty symbolism on hate crimes." |

MadTracks -- 'Welcome to 'The Ridge'' by Pushmi-Pullyu by Jessica Steinhoff on 05/12/09 at 3:00 pm | Musicians often find themselves pulled in two directions during their efforts to create. If there's one mythical creature that symbolizes this tension, it would be the Pushmi-Pullyu, an antelope with a head on each end of its body from the Doctor Doolittle stories. |

The Dandelion food cart is back with a new menu by Linda Falkenstein on 05/12/09 at 1:00 pm | Last year I found good vegetarian sandwiches at The Dandelion, an all-vegetarian and sometime-vegan food cart that parked just off the Square on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. A grilled tofu sandwich and a portobello mushroom Reuben had a tendency to fall apart, but were very satisfying. This year, the bright green cart is back, and with an entirely new menu. |

Quieter moments are better in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Madison Theatre Guild by Katie Reiser on 05/11/09 at 2:00 pm | At performances of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by the Madison Theatre Guild, I imagine most audience members are ready to compare the efforts of the lead actors to those in the 1976 Milos Forman film, which garnered Academy Awards for Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher. It's a little tough to push those iconic performances aside. |

Blaska's Blog: Loll not the tongue by David Blaska on 05/11/09 at 11:31 am | So the Madison Common Council has reinforced the supposed "right" of children to congregate unsupervised by any responsible adult until late at night (11 p.m. weeknights, midnight Fridays and Saturdays). No, the little darlings, neglected by their parents (should they be lucky to have a set), remain beyond the reach of our policing authorities. |

But there they are, the noses of their cruise ship-sized grand pianos touching with a healthy amount of eroticism. The artists at either end bounce like prize fighters atop black padded stools. They begin the program together. |
