A Book a Week: The Irish Game by Matthew Hart
I like to read about art theft. There's something so Robin Hood-ish about stealing paintings from rich folks. Of course I do know it's wrong to steal. Art in museums belongs to everyone; I don't want anyone to steal my stuff, whether that stuff is in my living room or in the Smithsonian.
MadTracks -- 'Call the Cops' by Whitney Mann
There are a lot of things that could be considered a crime, but trying to make someone else crack a smile is rarely one of them. Smilemongering, however, is one of the crimes Whitney Mann addresses in her song "Call the Cops."
Dane County Farmers' Market -- Renaissance Farm
Found at the State Street gateway to the Dane County Farmers' Market, the gooey cinnamon rolls baked by Mark Olson tempt every sense. Carrying on the tradition of the Oakhouse Bakery founders, and a 25-year veteran of the market, Mark and his sister do pastry right. And by the time the sweet treat is in hand, shoppers at the Renaissance Farm stand will certainly notice its wealth of artisanal herb products.

Summertimes, evictions, dog doo, and the Bayou in the May 22 edition of Isthmus
What can you find in this week's Isthmus? Highlights from the latest issue follow.
Performance painter Cosmo Joe entertains State Street (video)
A native of Milwaukee, the Appleton artist has toured his painting performances from L.A. to New York but favors Madison and sets up several times a year on State Street to feed on its vibe.
Beilke: Why newspapers don't deserve to die
Joining a cause on Facebook is a matter of clicking “yes” and hitting send, but as soon as I joined Don’t Let Newspapers Die another friend sent me a message asking me why on earth I would do such an idiotic thing. He is a friend who knows me well enough to know how often I complain about my newspapers’ contents.
Madison Etsy explorations: JSN Style
Fresh and fun, fabrics can add an extra special touch to any project. Recognizing the importance of good fabric, Aime Meyers utilizes the charm of Amy Butler's fabrics in her eye pillows. Relaxing in style is easy with Meyers' lavender filled sachets, sold in her Etsy shop JSN Style.
Wilmington on DVD: Valkyrie, Andrei Tarkovsky, Paul Blart, Outlander, and Fanboys
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, John Ford's last great Western, is a visually spare, deceptive masterpiece, and it boasts the Casablanca of all movie Western ensemble casts -- a remarkable gallery, topped by friendly legends James Stewart and John Wayne, with Lee Marvin as Liberty Valance, the cattlemen's demonic enforcer, gunslinger and murderer.
Blaska's Blog: Going to be a long, hot summer
These days when we go to the Meadowridge branch public library here on the southwest side of town we tell our loved ones, "Cover me, I’m going in to return a book."

Bartell Theatre companies emphasize feel-good fun in 2009-10 season
The Bartell Theatre hosted a season-announcement event on May 19 at its facility on East Mifflin Street. The six resident companies revealed a slate of plays heavy on comedy and fun -- a perfect remedy for hard times.

Madison's Northside Farmers Market: Best reason to shop on Sunday
I like stopping by the Northside market on Sunday morning and picking up most everything I'd get downtown: fresh greens, pasture-raised beef, maybe some organic bratwurst, cheese, cookies, a big hanging basket for the front of the house. And this time of year, asparagus, rhubarb and plenty of morels.

Daisy Cafe and Cupcakery opens on Atwood Avenue
The city’s first dedicated cupcakery seemed to be an immediate hit. Of course, I left with a cupcake.
The Little Dog Laughed by Strollers Theatre disappoints
Douglas Carter Beane's caustic comedy The Little Dog Laughed lifts its leg on the fire hydrant that is Hollywood, dousing that narcissistic never-never land with a well-deserved dose of reality. Sadly, Strollers Theatre's production, currently playing at the Bartell, has turned a comical canine into a hapless hound that is barking up the wrong tree.
Flaws in Madison Opera's crowd-pleasing Faust
Gounod's Faust endures as a sure-fire audience-pleaser, whether because of or despite any given production. After 150 years, however, there is still no definitive edition of the score, while performances offer jumbled versions of an inherently corrupt tradition.

The Week: May 18-21, 2009
This usually quiet post-semester pre-summer week in Madison offers more than the standard fare. The calendar includes: Wisconsin Fashion Week; the Wetland Gems celebration and the Independent Erotic Film Fest; and live music by Meiko, The Used, Venice Gas House Trolley, The HoneyPot Crew, Con Vivo, Black Moth Super Rainbow with School of Seven Bells, and F. Stokes with Bi-Polar Bear.
Resonant family dynamic in Mercury Players' production of Well
I should confess that I wasn't exactly chomping at the bit to see Mercury Players Theatre's production of Well at their MercLab space on Fair Oaks, because the press release description sounded like more than I wanted to deal with on a Friday night. But I'm so glad I accepted the assignment.
Public Enemies rollout continues amid tax credit debate
Public Enemies, the Wisconsin-filmed gangster movie starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale, doesn't open till July 1. But here's an early sign of more hoopla to come: Word that Point Cinema will host a screening of Public Enemies one day early, on June 30. The event benefits Film Wisconsin, the Milwaukee-based nonprofit that promotes filmmaking here in the Badger State.
Beer Here -- Unplugged: Imperial Saison from New Glarus Brewing
Just when I begin to think about the crisp, bubbly brews of summer, New Glarus brewmaster Dan Carey and his talented laboratory manager Randy Thiel are up to something special. Guess we shouldn't be all that surprised! I wondered what might be created if Carey and Thiel "unplugged" to create something outside the traditional brewhaus. Their co-creation is a beer called Imperial Saison and it just hit local shelves last weekend.
The Week on Forum: Grocery triggers, state worker furloughs, and historic buildings
After last week's throwback edition, Forons have redirected their attention the present, discussing everything from recent political movements to cool tech gadgets. Of course, some flew under the radar, reminding us all of the Dr. Spocks and Mrs. Pac Men of yore.
Mad Rollin' Dolls fight for 2009 season championship
Throughout the first four years of Mad Rollin' Dolls roller derby, the Unholy Rollers and Vaudeville Vixens volleyed between third and last place. Derby is hardly a static sport, though, and now at the end of the league's fifth season, these historic underdogs will lace up their skates, strap on their helmets, and battle for the championship trophy this Saturday. And they didn't get there without a fight.

The Week[end]: May 15-17, 2009
Rejoice! Summer leads off strong this weekend with a trifecta of festivals: Syttende Mai, the WORT Block Party, and Fiesta Hispana. There's much more on deck though, including: the Madison Poetry Slam team finals; productions of Faust, Little Dog Laughed, and Well; stand-up from The Comedy Craze and Christian Finnegan; and live shows by Yawo, Kelly Joe Phelps, All That Remains, Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks, The Type, a SWBMA benefit, Nick Jaina with Vid Libert, the Wisconsin Chamber Choir, Zebras with Screamin Cyn Cyn & the Pons, and Pistols at Dawn.
Blaska's Blog: Brenda Konkel is a racist
Hey, why not? That's the Madison way, isn't it? Throw it up against the wall, see if it sticks. Watch the recipient stammer, deny, invoke past good deeds, swear to no incorrect thoughts, do a Winston Smith.
A Book a Week: Who Do You Think You Are by Alyse Myers
Who Do You Think You Are by Alyse Myers is a sad and depressing book. Alyse Myers tells the story of her unhappy childhood in Queens in the 1960s, her turbulent relationship with her mother, and her struggle to be a better mother to her own daughter.
