Vinyl Cave -- Green Lyte Sunday by Green Lyte Sunday
Green Lyte Sunday was a Dayton, Ohio, band who took a shot at the big time, signing an album deal with RCA Victor in 1969. The resulting self-titled long-player reveals a very talented group of musicians with a distinct ability at blending pop and jazz influences.
A Book a Week: Hearts and Minds by Rosy Thornton
Academic fiction is a sub-genre of literary fiction. Academic fiction set at a women's college must then be a sub-sub-genre. The small number of books that fit the bill may explain why Rosy Thornton's publishers have packaged this book as chick lit or romance; they didn't know what to do with it.
Basford's Spin City: Getting the popcorn ready for the Sotomayor confirmation
When the history of the Obama Administration is written, there will undoubtedly be many great policies and decisions that will be recorded and referenced as long as American history is studied. However, he's going to have to really step up his game in order to surpass the sheer brilliance of his decision to nominate Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court earlier this week.
The Week on Forum: Sonia Sotomayor, students, brats and bikes, and Jon + Kate
Forons focused on both local and national goings-on this week. From Brat Fest to Bicycle Benefits to bench nominations, there was no stone unturned and no topic unscathed.
Beer Here -- Wild Rice from Capital Brewery
After being out of the beer lineup for a few years, our own Capital Brewery of Middleton has a proven recipe that is returning to area beer shelves this summer. Wild Rice lager took a few years off, but it's out again now, and it's well worth picking up a six-pack over the next few weeks.

The Week[end]: May 29-31, 2009
May goes out strong with a bonus weekend overflowing with early summer fun. Good bets include: Festa Italia and the World Dance Alliance-Americas General Assembly; the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and Burgers & Brew; productions of Twelfth Night and Queer Shorts 4; standup by Jeff Dunham and the home season closer for the Wisconsin Wolfpack; the Spring Splash Reggae Bash, and more live music by Nathaniel Bartlett, the Meat Puppets, Brainerd, Brothers Burn Mountain, the Ancora String Quartet, the Oakwood Chamber Players, The Felice Brothers, Pupy Costello, Chiodos, and Dead Sparrows.
IGDA represents Madison on global gaming scene
Madison is already known for its tight-knit arts scene, including dedicated musicians and filmmakers, and now, thanks the expanded efforts of the Independent Game Developers Association (IGDA), local video game developers are getting together too. The Madison chapter, which represents all of Wisconsin in the international organization, held its latest quarterly meeting at the downtown offices of the start-up Sharendipity.
A map of farmers markets in the Madison metro area
A great way to spend a sunny morning or the early evening post-work hours, farmers markets have become desintations for both tourists and locals during Wisconsin summers.
Dane County Farmers' Market -- Out of Our Gourd
For more than a quarter century, Ted and Joan Ballweg of Out of Our Gourd have offered a broad array of chili pepper products at the Dane County Farmers' Market. Based on their farm located between Verona and Paoli, they grow many varieties of peppers, including Habaneros, seranoes, jalapaneos, cayennes, Thais, and Anaheims, along calla lily flowers and raspberries in season.
Outside magazine tabs Devil's Lake as a bargain escape
Devil's Lake is among the destinations featured in Outside magazine's June cover feature, "25 Weekend Escapes (for Under $500)" -- putting the Wisconsin climbing mecca in the company of Class V whitewater rafting in Colorado, kiteboarding North Carolina's Outer Banks, climbing Mount Rainier, and circumnavigating Oregon's Mountain Hood on a hut-to-hut mountain biking tour.

Jazz Fest, UW Arboretum, unsung artists, and summer brews in the May 29 edition of Isthmus
What can you find in this week's Isthmus? Highlights from the latest issue follow.
Beilke: State budget cuts don't measure up
The small handful of commentators who still track state government mostly praised the governor and the Joint Finance Committee for making these "tough choices." I disagree.
Blaska's Blog: We're ba-(r)-aack!
While the nabobs are busy writing obituaries for America's conservative party, Republicans are lighting birthday candles and singing rousing fight songs. While the punditocracy clucks "whither the Republican Party -- the new Whigs?" those of us on the righteous Right are winning back large swaths of the population.
Wilmington on DVD: John Wayne, Zabriskie Point, Of Time and the City, New in Town
In El Dorado (in that '50s-'60s movie Western dreamland we know so well), aging sure-shot hero John Wayne, recovering drunk Robert Mitchum, cocky kid James Caan and colorful old coot Arthur Hunnicutt are besieged in the town jail by a corrupt rancher's hired guns, just as Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson and Walter Brennan once were in Howard Hawks' pop classic Rio Bravo.

MadTracks -- 'All Night Party' by Brainerd
With ties to other popular, hard-rocking bands from the area -- Killdozer and Mad Trucker Gone Mad via Crustacean Records and Bongzilla, which also calls Mike "Magma" Henry a member -- Brainerd's got a good start on its fame quest. And its brand-new album, The Goat, takes care of the shaking and slashing.
Habanero's Mexican Grill on Stoughton Road: The proof is in the barbacoa
Habanero's has borrowed a page from Mexican burrito franchises like Qdoba and Chipotle: Customers line up and the staff stuffs a burrito according to the customer's whim from the building blocks in the steam trays. But Habanero's is working with some good building blocks, with long, slow simmered meats at the heart of the experience.

The Week: May 26-28, 2009
Extend the holiday weekend and start summer out right this week with some time out on the town. The calendar includes: Music Theatre Idol; a book reading by Kevin Henkes and Laura Dronzek; and, live music by Nice Peter, The Parlor Mob, Porcupine, Freedy Johnston, and Aerial Ruin.

Blaska's Blog: Let Basford eat burgers
"Basford's Spin City" is Isthmus's attempt to abate the ire of the torch-bearing mob, incensed that the bastion of Leftist exposition would allow your congenial host to challenge the one true (but unexamined) faith.
Peaches gets juicy in Madison show at Majestic
Peaches is known for a number of things, but subtlety isn't one of them. Saturday night's show at the Majestic proved that the Canadian electroclash icon isn't just a gender bender but a gender blender, smashing the boundaries between male and female and grinding them into a sweet, juicy pulp.
Vinyl Cave -- 2131 South Michigan Avenue: 60's Garage & Psychedelia from U.S.A. and Destination Records from Sundazed Music
When a reissue of tracks from the U.S.A. family of labels was announced by Sundazed earlier this year, I nearly had a heart attack.
Beer Here -- Prairie Moon Farmhouse Belgian Style Ale from Lake Louie Brewing
Not everyone means “lawn mower beer” in a positive way. It’s a reference to light fizzy beer without character or flavor. However, while Prairie Moon Farmhouse Belgian Style Ale from Lake Louie could be considered a lawn mower beer for its light and refreshing qualities, it has a unique and flavorful personality all of its own.
The Week on Forum: Road construction, bird songs, and a letter to Dick Cheney
Forons were jaded as ever this week, cuttin' down everything from Nancy Pelosi to a new east side café. Despite the cutting cynicism, though, a few were able to find the simple pleasures of hotel soap and super-size spuds.
The Week[end]: May 22-25, 2009
The World's Largest Brat Fest looms over Memorial Day in Madison, but it's merely the meaty center to a busy holiday weekend. The fun also includes: the Madison Marathon and the Madison Classic Horse Show; the grand opening of Out; the finale of Wisconsin Fashion Week; and, live music from Denise LaGrassa, Plum Union, Chafo, Comstock Reunion, Felicia Alima, Mr. Brownstone, Josh Harty, Felix, Peaches, Arizona, and Perry Weber & the DeVilles. The long weekend ends patriotically with the Monona Memorial Day Parade and a Madison Veterans for Peace commemoration.
Basford's Spin City: It's going to be a long, awesome summer
It's a great time of anticipation as most of America gets ready for the start of the summer season. Most of us are spending this weekend grilling and chilling, working in our yards and keeping in our thoughts those who sacrificed for our country and the reason for the upcoming holiday.
