Basford's Spin City: Rick Berg's tin-foil hat is on a little tight
When I read a Rick Berg article, I can count on the make-up being 80% conservative think-tank boilerplate served up in a genial manner, 18% swipes at the local left and 2% flat-out raving wingnuttery.
Warm night, cool sounds on Friday at the 2009 Isthmus Jazz Festival
I walked in just as Patrick Breiner blew the first blast of the evening: a startling, corkscrewing, unaccompanied improvisation on tenor sax that lasted for minutes without a break. It was an impressive feat of circular breathing -- the method of sucking air in while simultaneously blowing it out -- and it served notice that Breiner is a force to be reckoned with.
Wisconsin AG's office plays vital openness role
A few times each month, the office of Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen sends me batches of e-mails containing its responses to citizens and public officials who write it seeking guidance on open government issues. The state's open records and open meeting laws specifically state that "any person" may ask the office for advice on any aspect of these complicated laws.
Beer here at the Duck Pond with the Madison Mallards
What goes well with duck? Apparently beer! The Madison Mallards’attendance figures keep growing every year, and beer may be one factor in that success.
The Week on Forum: Downtown buskers, online reds, Timecrimes, and open carry
Forons were all about their city this week, chatting about everything from Madison gun carry laws to Overture Center billings. Some of us were angry, while others found humor in Salisbury steak warfare and rogue religious figures.
Pedaling Revolution takes a bike-centric look at U.S. cities
GM just went bust. The Highway "Trust" Fund went bust a few months ago. The repo man is busy, busy, busy. No better time than today to introduce a great book that celebrates a better way: Pedaling Revolution: How Cyclists Are Changing American Cities, by Jeff Mapes.
Cutting through the 'bullcrap' at the Glenn Beck 'Common Sense' simulcast
Before the Glenn Beck "Common Sense" live simulcast at Point Cinemas started Thursday night, an ad ran proclaiming, "Tonight's attendance: sold out!" and thanking the audience for packing the house. Next it reminded us that a packed house could be a fire-safety hazard. Then it assured us that we probably weren't in danger, since the theater had been inspected... by the federal government. (Ba-dum-bump.)

The Week[end]: June 5-7, 2009
Live music leads the way around Madison over this first weekend of June, opening with the Isthmus Jazz Festival, and building with TerraceFest, the Brooklyn Bluegrass Festival, and more shows by Straylight Run, Lil Rev, Portugal. The Man, Pretty Lights, and Rock Plaza Central. This is but the soundtrack to a busy summer arts and festival schedule, which also includes the First Friday opening to Curator's Choice at MMoCA, the Wisconsin Wrights New Play Development Project, the kickoff of Bike to Work Week, Cows on the Concourse, the Clean Lakes Festival, the Hot Rod Power Tour, and an Access to Health Care fundraiser.
Madison Art Bikes 2009 to rally 'round the Capitol
Bicycles are a Madison summer staple. From fancy Bianchis to mountain bikes bought at Target, we all love a good ride through the Arboretum, down the Lakeshore Path or beside Lake Monona. Biking is also an eco-friendly method of transportation to both work and play. And no group celebrates this healthy car alternative more than Madison Art Bikes and their annual Art Bikes Rally.
Rooftop Cinema commences senior year of avant-garde film atop MMoCA
Four years is a long time in a transient college town, certainly enough to make Rooftop Cinema at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art an abiding summer tradition. The four week-long avant-garde and experimental film series returns on Friday for yet another all-too-short month of screenings atop a garden overlooking State Street.
Dane County Farmers' Market -- West Star Farm
Well known for their bedding plants, George and Tanya Kohn of West Star Farm offer a wide variety of produce through the season at the Dane County Farmers' Market. Along with the flowers and herb, their booth on South Pinckney Street boasts seasonal certified organic fruits and vegetables, including heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, onions, peppers, garlic, potatoes, squashes, and their specialty crop, salsify.
Vote online for Madison's Favorites 2009
You be the judge! While senate confirmation hearings can be tricky, there's nothing complicated about participating in the Madison's Favorites Poll.

Blaska's Blog: No wonder! Democrats are at the controls!
Elections matter, the Democrats are always telling us. So now we have Democrats ruling the roost in the State Capitol, having finally captured the State Assembly last fall. For the first time in 20 years they control both houses of the Legislature and the governor’s office. Aren’t we lucky!
Beilke: Madison Peace Park facelift is 'scum park' redux
The very first article I wrote for Isthmus was about the city's plans to get rid of Link Park and turn it into a mini mall and parking garage. That was almost 20 years ago, in the summer of 1990.
Summer's here! Enjoy your student-free downtown, Madison!
With thousands of students back home working at the municipal pool or playing video games or whatever they do, downtown Madison is a horse of a different color.
Spice Yatra food cart needs a kitchen
A most welcome addition to last year's food cart options on the Capitol Square was Spice Yatra, the first cart dedicated to Indian food in Madison. The food felt like Indian home cooking, with simple yet complexly flavored menu items like chana masala, chicken saag (spinach), yellow daal, vegetable curry, and kadai chicken. Spice Yatra didn't return to the Square this spring, though. Why not? It seemed to have won so many fans.
Wilmington on DVD: Revolutionary Road, Defiance, He's Just Not That Into You, Taken
Revolutionary Road, which I've seen twice (for Oscar reasons), is a sometimes too distant, but often cuttingly ironic and despairing look at people trapped in the immaculately humdrum life of middle-class suburbia in the '50s.
Madison Etsy explorations: Sugar Plum Collars
I don't own a dog but the collars at Sugar Plum Collars jumped out at me no less because of it. Sewn with fabric that is bright and colorful, each one is adorable. The patterns are fun and certainly not ones that you have ever seen used for a dog collar before. A Sugar Plum collar would definitely make your pup the most unique on the block.

Ancora String Quartet plays final recital of season with Smetana, Griffes, and Hindemith
The Ancora String Quartet played its final concert of the season on Saturday, May 30 -- at their home base, the First Unitarian Society -- nicely filling a yawning gap between the end of spring's formal music-making and the stirring of busy summer activities in Madison.

Today's image titled “High goals” was photographed by Craig Wilson.
The Week: June 1-4, 2009
The Madison Mallards make summer official this week when they open their ninth season. There's much more than baseball on deck, though, including: book readings by Harold Varmus, and Arthur and Ursula Rathburn; and the return to a lively concert calendar with shows by SSION, Gibraltar Rockets, Jenny Lewis with The Sadies, Halestorm, and Steez.
