Beer Here: Crack'd Wheat from New Glarus Brewing by Robin Shepard on 06/19/09 at 2:00 pm | As for the beer of choice for the day, it was difficult to pick one, but on a beautiful hilltop overlooking town, a wheat beer just seemed right. And with New Glarus, there's a choice among three different weizens. With its crisp hoppy edge, it was Crack'd Wheat that I decided to take home as a memento of the occasion. |

Warbling about everything from sports to crime to paying your bill at the Dane, at least they now know they can find solace in an icy Limoncello or a trip to Cudahay. |

What's the big deal about Public Enemies? by David Medaris on 06/19/09 at 11:00 am | There's something about all the hysteria surrounding Public Enemies, the blockbuster gangster movie opening July 1, that makes me recoil. Why is it that this city and state go all weak in the knees at the slightest whiff of Hollywood perfume? |

Beilke: Wisconsin plays tuneless trumpet with public defender fees by Dustin Beilke on 06/18/09 at 11:00 am | It turns out that Wisconsin's $40 per hour reimbursement for public defense attorneys is now among the lowest in the nation. The rate had been $35 an hour since 1978 before it was increased to $50 in 1993. It was cut back to $40 two years later, when the momentary success of Newt Gingrich's "Contract with America" was destroying sensible public policy everywhere. |

Madison Etsy explorations: Red Otter by Megan Larson on 06/17/09 at 2:00 pm | To do lists are a daily part of my life. I have them scrambled on tiny post-its and scraps of paper, littering the dark corners of my tote bag. Sometimes I splurge and buy cute little notepads for my lists, although those tend to get used quickly as I almost invent lists just to use them. The notebooks at Red Otter would be no exception for me. |

Madame Fromage: Bohemia Blue from Hidden Springs Creamery by Tenaya Darlington on 06/17/09 at 1:00 pm | For the last two months, I've been eating as many kinds of blue cheese as possible. No, no, this is not some culinary form of Fear Factor. I just happen to love strong cheese, and one day I realized that, for as much time as I spend lurking about cheese counters, I don’t actually know all that much about my favorite food. |

A Book a Week: Lulu in Marrakech by Diane Johnson by Becky Holmes on 06/16/09 at 6:00 pm | I loved Diane Johnson's three earlier books about American expatriates in France: Le Divorce, Le Mariage and L'Affaire. All three were funny, original, compelling and delivered laser-like critiques of both French and American culture. Johnson writes with a distinctive breezy style that belies her sharp observations and subtle characterizations. |
