Beer Here: The Big O from O'so Brewing
With the hotter days of summer now upon us, the lighter wheat beers seem just right with their crisp citrus flavors and effervescence. The Big O from O'so Brewing is a light-bodied beer made with a heavy dose of wheat malt.

The Week on Forum: Sarah Palin, summer songs, Doyle, and the Edgewater
Downtown bars, political repositioning and more deaths: Forons ran wild this week. Many railed against Sarah Palin and Governor Doyle, while others channeled their creative diatribes into college-kid bashing and upholding State Street as the epicenter of the city. Perhaps we should declare The Pub the new Capitol?

The Week[end]: July 10-12, 2009
Summer reaches its apogee this weekend with a confluence of celebrations, including La Fete de Marquette, Art Fair on the Square, Art Fair off the Square, and the Madison Early Music Festival. The calendar also includes: product by APT and Dames at Sea by UT, and live music from Moving Mountains, John Statz, Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, Cadaver in Drag, Black Francis, Hollywood Undead, Biff Blumfumgagnge, The Crest with Carnage the Executioner, and The Midwest Beat with The Cave Weddings.
Chad Lee is better looking than you and running for Congress
With a sudden outburst in social network activity and the establishment of a new website, Mount Horeb native and Better Butler co-founder Chad Lee has unofficially declared himself a candidate for Wisconsin's 2nd Congressional District.
Mad Dog's on Henry Street is back in business
Steve Nelson, for the last five years food director at Madison's Bethel Lutheran, has taken over the stand and opened it early this week, although he hasn’t been publicizing the "soft" open in order to get the operation well on its feet. The grand opening is slated for July 20.
MadTracks -- 'Paper Sky' by Gladstone
Gladstone is still a rock band -- and quite a poppy one at that -- but the sound is more produced and more suited to a three-minute single than an epic, album-length jam.
Monkey longevity, Google, and trees down on Spaight
Plus, Konkel has Thuy's back, Nichole & JM head to Olive Garden and Coasties vs. Sconnies on reality TV.
Dane County Farmers' Market: Kopke's Fruit of the Bloom
The small village of greenhouses that makes up Kopke's Fruit of the Bloom is located in the town of Dunn less than a dozen miles south of the Capitol, a relatively short distance for vendors at the Dane County Farmers' Market. Operated by Gordon Kopke for nearly thirty years, the greenhouse offers a colorful and aromatic array of bedding plants and hanging baskets, along with herbs, nursery stock, and vegetables.
Blaska's Blog jumps off the Bridge to Nowhere
I was wrong. I admit it. Miranda-ize me and make me do the perp walk. Sarah Palin is not qualified to be president of the United States and therefore, is not qualified to be a heartbeat away.

A Book A Week: The Dissident by Nell Freudenberger
Can I just list some of the topics Freudenberger tackles? Adolescent ennui, adultery, Chinese experimental art, culture shock, the nature of commitment, the Hollywood movie industry, identity and Tiananmen Square. With this many balls in the air at once, it's not surprising that a few of them drop and roll away without our ever knowing where they end up.
Badger Bus Depot, Steve Stricker, and the Wis. Bus. Council
Plus, what happens when a district attorney from one of Wisconsin's sleepiest counties stops being polite... and starts getting real.
Public Enemies extras from Madison finally see their movie
On July 1, I saw Public Enemies at the Columbus Downtown Development Corporation's premiere, held at Eastgate Cinemas in Madison. The auditorium was filled with busloads of people who'd made the trip from Columbus to see their neighbors, their main street, and -- just maybe -- themselves on the silver screen.
Wilmington on DVD: Lonely Are the Brave, The John Barrymore Collection, Knowing
Dalton Trumbo's favorite of all his screenplays, Lonely Are the Brave, is a stirring adaptation of Edward Abbey’s Brave Cowboy -- a moving and exciting modern chase western, with Kirk Douglas as Jack Burns, an individualist modern cowboy on the run from a posse that includes helicopters, high-powered rifles and police radio.

New Sonic on University is a bust
So in the midst of many reminders to myself not to let summer slip away this year, I made it to the Sonic Drive-In on University Avenue near Allen Boulevard last night. Piled the dogs in the back seat and took off in anticipation of a super-fun summer fast food experience.

MadTracks -- 'Bus Ride Kutacane To Brastagi' by Venice Gas House Trolley
While this title doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, Adam Gregory Pergament's spoken word, layered atop a free jazz composition for drums, guitar and more, gets listeners freestyling along -- or at least bopping their heads -- at live shows, including the performance of: "Mad Toast Live" at which the song was recorded in May.

The Week: July 6-9, 2009
Summer eases into its second half this week, and the live music season is going strong. The calendar includes: the new Faces in the Sand exhibit at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum; the latest editions of Mad Toast Live and Concerts on the Square; and more tunes by Jessica Lea Mayfield, Mat Kearney, Fountains of Wayne with Jon Auer, William Fitzsimmons, and The Henhouse Prowlers.
Vinyl Cave: Illuminations by Buffy Sainte-Marie
Legendary singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie has maintained an amazingly wide-ranging career in music, art, education and activism for more than four decades -- including a period of "retirement" to raise a family starting in the late '70s. Often controversial for her protest songs in the 1960s, her own recordings have been mostly absent from the radio in the United States since that time.
The Week on Forum: Celebrity deaths, fireworks, and domestic partnerships
Arts and entertainment were the focus of the forum this week. Forons waxed poetic about the ongoing string of celebrity deaths, while others lamented the postponed Concerts on the Square and the state of Rhythm and Booms. A sprinkling of local politics provided a welcome reprieve from our star-studded grief.

The Week[end]: July 3-5, 2009
Fourth of July weekend is always a busy one, and the fireworks get started early with the Elver Park display on Friday. More mid-summer fun can be found throughout the region, including the Stoughton Fair, the Monona Community Festival, and Independence Day celebrations in Columbus, DeForest and Evansville. Also on the docket are: the National Women's Music Festival; productions of The Comedy of Errors and The Philanderer at APT; stand-up by Randall Chestnut; a UW Carillon recital, Madtown Bloodbath V, and more live music by Cash Box Kings, Pearl Snap Saturday, Babyland, The Record Low, Lucha Libre, Pupy Costello, and Pterodactyl.
'Gangsta' photo at downtown Madison post office stirs controversy
It was hardly "Piss Christ" or a Robert Mapplethorpe erotic nude picture. But a picture by an 11-year-old Hmong girl of her stepbrother prompted two complaints (one from a Madison police officer) and a lot of hand-wringing about what is appropriate for an art show in a Madison public building.
