The Week on Forum: Sconnies, doppelgangers, online groceries, and Target
Business was on our minds this week, as Forons gabbed about online shopping, new local eateries and a possible Target at Hilldale Mall. With all of these plans -- and the content of our wallets -- up in the air, thank God some of us have Jesus on speed dial.
Sweet-Cannoli Nuptials is amplified chaos
Sweet-Cannoli Nuptials is back for its sixth year of what some folks might call immersive theater. While the audience is part of the show, I'd like to offer a more accurate description: Sweet-Cannoli Nuptials is theater on massive amounts of cocaine.

The Week[end]: July 17-19, 2009
A deluge of summer fun engulfs Madison for a second consecutive weekend with Maxwell Street Days, the Dane County Fair, the MadFork Musid Fest, the Madison Early Music Festival, the Green & Gold Training Camp, Paddle & Portage, and Greek Fest. Looking for more? The calendar also includes productions of The Yeomen of the Guard and Riot Acts; a book reading by Michael Schuler; a live broadcast by Ed Schultz; Crustacean Records birthday parties, and more live music from Framing Hanley, Hivemind, SR-71, Ott, and Gaelic Storm.
A Book A Week: Escape by Carolyn Jessop, with Laura Palmer
I don't usually read books about the issue du jour, if you know what I mean. For some reason, however, I was attracted to Escape by Carolyn Jessop, who escaped from the FLDS, the fundamentalist polygamous cult that was recently raided by the Texas authorities for alleged child abuse.
Dane County Farmers' Market: Blue Skies Berry Farm
Perhaps best known for its pick-your-own raspberry patch, the Blue Skies Berry Farm has also been a vendor at the Dane County Farmers' Market for 17 years. Its booth on East Main Street is brimming with a vast and changing spectrum of bright, fresh fruits and vegetables, including cooking greens, baby carrots, beets, sweet onions, French beans, edible flowers, herbs, heirloom tomatoes, and of course, raspberries.
James DeVita shines in APT's smart In Acting Shakespeare
In Acting Shakespeare is James DeVita's adaptation of Acting Shakespeare, a one-man show by Ian McKellen. American Players Theatre's DeVita isn't quite Sir Ian -- a luminary of both high and pop culture -- but he's as close to the mark as most of us mere mortals have any right to expect.

Mad Pride, classical music, the Momo, and Tapas Rias in the July 17 edition of Isthmus
What can you find in this week's Isthmus? Highlights from the latest issue follow.
Madame Fromage: Halloumi makes for a heavenly burger
I stepped off the blue cheese path this week to wander into the realm of grillable cheese. That's right, cheese you slap right on the barby. I first tried Halloumi earlier this month at London's Borough Market, where a group of dreadlocked dreamers were grilling up Heavenly Halloumi Burgers.
Madison Etsy explorations: HRS Designs
Bold jewelry choices do not necessarily mean wearing a very complex and intricate piece. Sometimes simple lines can make the biggest statement. The jewelry of HRS Designs reflects this sentiment with pieces that convey a modern simplicity, allowing the stone or bead to do much of the talking.
Madison Farmworks will garden for you -- or with you
Plenty of people have landscaping services plant and take care of their decorative flowers and other yard features, but have somebody else design and take care of your vegetable garden? That's downright un-American, Jimmy!
Wilmington on DVD: 12, For All Mankind, John Gilbert, and The Haunting in Connecticut
12 is a modern Russian version of one of the great virtuoso American melodramas: writer Reginald Rose’s teleplay-turned-movie-turned-stage play 12 Angry Men.

Ricardo Gonzalez to resume control and reopen Cardinal Bar
Cancel the wake. "The Cardinal Bar will live," says Ricardo Gonzalez. As of Tuesday morning, the erstwhile proprietor of the landmark Madison nightspot is once again at the helm -- and expressing grand ambitions for returning the Cardinal to its glory days as a dance bar.
Crustacean Records celebrates 15th anniversary with showcase blowout
Crustacean Records has expanded beyond Wisconsin's borders during the last 15 years, and seems well-positioned to unleash many more albums from their ever-growing roster of aggressive and inventive rock, metal and punk bands, whatever the dominant release format may be in the future.
Win tickets to The Backsliders, The Riverdales, Monte Montgomery, and more!
The Isthmus Guest List is back with another round of free tickets to amazing concerts, shows and more fun events around Madison. This week's contests include tickets to: the Andrea Kapsalis & Goran Ivanovic Guitar Duo, The Backsliders, Heavy Hands, and Rising Gael at the Frequency; Monte Montgomery at the Club Tavern; Disappears and Doomtree at the High Noon; The Riverdales at the Majestic; and more!

Isthmus Reads: Over the Edge, The Great Gatsby, and Flannery: A Life of Flannery O'Connor
A compelling account of the 2000 kidnapping of four U.S. climbers, Over the Edge is set along the remote and lawless borders of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan in central Asia, and based on extensive interviews with the climbers and other participants in the drama, including one of their captors.
The weekend that was: The Hold Steady, art fairs, La Fete de Marquette, and more
Isthmoids fanned out around the city this weekend, as did many other Madisonians. Here is a photographic sampling of what they encountered.
Madison eats agenda: Local Night Out, DiverCity Picnic, and Greekfest 2009
The coming week, in events that get to your heart through your stomach.

The Week: July 13-16, 2009
Simple summer pleasures reign at the Dane County Fair, which opens at the Alliant Energy Center. Other fun options around town this week include: the return of Blooming Butterflies to Olbrich Gardens; productions of Late Night Catechism and Sweet-Cannoli Nuptials; a book reading by Nathan Rabin; a cinematic Concerts on the Square and a big Crustacean Records Anniversary Showcase; and, more live music from She Swings, She Sways, as well as The Apologists, the Caleb Klauder Country Band with The Fog Horn Duo, and Cowboy Mouth.
Antiques Roadshow returns to Madison and sifts through trash and treasure
It looked like a mass moving day as Madisonians filed into the Alliant Energy Center on Saturday. PBS's Antiques Roadshow was in town to appraise our old stuff, and people walked through the parking lot with carts, suitcases and arms loaded with objects that might be worth a lot of money -- or a little, or maybe nothing at all.
APT opens Touchstone Theatre with taut Old Times
This weekend, American Players Theatre (APT) officially opened its new indoor stage, the Touchstone Theatre. And after seeing APT's production of Harold Pinter's Old Times, now I know exactly what artistic director David Frank meant when he told me in May that the Touchstone would be a home for "plays we could never do up the hill."
MadTracks -- 'Names' by The LeeDing Zeros
Lynda Higgins, the band's singer says the song hearkens back to the way kids yell "do-over!" when a game or some other adventure doesn't quite turn out right. But it's definitely a piece about ugly, grown-up kinds of struggles.
Sassy songs, snappy dancing in Dames at Sea by University Theatre
Because this show often ends up in high school repertories, I was a little apprehensive about seeing the University Theatre production of Dames at Sea, but happily it turned out to be a fun evening. Dames is a tongue in cheek look at the clichés of lavish musicals and gets its inspiration from The Gold Digger films of the 1930's.
UW spoken word poets draw crowds, cheers at summer teacher institute
To write articulate and presentable spoken word poetry is a daring and artistic feat at any age; to present a 15-minute solo piece of your most emotional written word to a largely unknown audience as a high-school student is just plain mesmerizing.
Vinyl Cave: Dollar bin diving for Dionne Warwick
Anyone familiar with crate digging knows those records that are seen over and over, for years after their release -- yesterday's hits, usually in crummy condition, clogging up every thrift store and dollar bin. But what if one was to see some of these albums in nice condition, and actually buy them?
Basford's Spin City checks back in
Poor Sarah Palin. She was the most mistreated woman ever to engage in national politics -- that is, if you disregard everything said about Hillary Clinton from January 1, 1992 to September 1, 2008. Nobody ever talked openly on cable news and AM talk radio about Sarah Palin being a lesbian or a maneater or someone who had her lover/lawyer murdered.
