Not quite -- the seats were more comfortable, the room felt bigger, and the set and costumes weren't so audaciously ornate. But you did get lost in the performance. |

Courtroom madness in Romance by Strollers Theatre by Jennifer A. Smith on 08/14/09 at 11:08 am | Watching the news lately, it seems that America is increasingly becoming a nation of screamers. Maybe I'm a little too worn out, then, to appreciate the seven men in David Mamet's Romance, a 2005 courtroom comedy currently being staged by Strollers Theatre. |

But because more riders seem to be buying the $55 monthly bus passes instead of paying cash for each trip, Madison Metro Transit brought in $440,000 less in ticket revenues than it had budgeted for. |

The Bloodshot Records Beer-B-Q visits Madison for its Quinceañera by Bob Koch on 08/13/09 at 2:00 pm | Even though Madison is one of the smallest cities on the tour, Bloodshot co-founder Rob Miller says it was a natural choice. A Book A Week: Fearless Fourteen by Janet Evanovich by Becky Holmes on 08/12/09 at 6:00 pm | This was an emergency purchase in the Minneapolis airport last week. I was changing planes there (en route to Portland) and realized too late that I had forgotten my book on the first plane. But hooray: A kiosk selling paperbacks was right across from my gate. |

Madame Fromage: Fresh ricotta with herbs by Tenaya Darlington on 08/12/09 at 2:00 pm | The tomatoes in the garden are ripe, and all I want for supper is some good bread, some creamy ricotta and a handful of fresh herbs. This month, I'm keeping my cheese choices simple as the humidity sets in, and whipping up a quick ricotta spread has become my new way of tying together a quick patio snack. |

Madison Etsy explorations: Prettifications by Megan Larson on 08/12/09 at 1:00 pm | Vintage pieces add a certain je ne sais quoi quality to an outfit, a character that is hard to replicate but easy to love. One may spend hours combing antique stores and flea markets for the perfect original piece, the time you spend adding more history and memories for what will soon become a treasure. |

Wilmington on DVD: Katyn, Bye-Bye Braverman, I Love you Man, and 17 Again by Mike Wilmington on 08/12/09 at 10:00 am | War is hell, or at least purgatory. Few filmmakers have shown that as clearly as the 83-year-old Polish master Andrzej Wajda. Wajda, a sometime cinematic genius, is one of the last members left of the great international cinema generation that included Bergman, Fellini, Antonioni and Satyajit Ray, and he's also perhaps the very best of all Polish filmmakers, living or dead. |

Blaska's Blog: What would our fathers have done? by David Blaska on 08/12/09 at 8:50 am | My father was a World War 2 vet, a farmer, and a state legislator. As he approached his 80s he kept a small-bore Smith & Wesson in the glove compartment of his gas guzzler. He had spent his whole life in control and did not intend to become a victim at his age.

MadTracks: 'Grand Panjandrum' by The Motherhive Syndicate by Jessica Steinhoff on 08/11/09 at 3:00 pm | If Urban Outfitters' newest offerings -- plaid flannel shirts and dresses that might've been pilfered from Bridget Fonda's closet in Singles -- are any indication, grunge is on the way back in. This is good news for The Motherhive Syndicate, a local band rocking out to the tune of Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and other purveyors of the Seattle Sound. |

The beer gods smiled on Great Taste of the Midwest 2009 by Robin Shepard on 08/10/09 at 1:00 pm | There's a quote attributed to Benjamin Franklin that gets passed around a lot in the beer world: "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." Whether or not Franklin actually uttered these words, there must be some truth to the saying: The heavens bestowed a blessing of sunshine on Madison's annual Great Taste of the Midwest, held this past Saturday at Olin-Turville Park. |
