Did we see you at the King Street Block Party?
On a day that felt more like mid-October than late August, the King Street Block Party gave Madisonians one last opportunity to let it all hang out last Saturday before school started this week.
A review of Nature's Second Chance: Restoring the Ecology of Stone Prairie Farm, by Steven Apfelbaum
Although Steven Apfelbaum is today a professional ecological restoration consultant who owns and operates Applied Ecological Services in Brodhead, Nature's Second Chance is not a tech-y treatise or a step-by-step guide to prairie restoration. It's a memoir of how he rehabbed his farmland and how that process helped him to step away from his more scientific obsessions and learn to live.
Madison Etsy explorations: Kristy Sly Glass
I adored the Murano glass wine stopper my husband and I picked up in Venice, and have kicked myself since for giving it away as a gift. Stumbling on the wine stoppers at Kristy Sly Glass was like returning to the winding Venetian alleys.
Wilmington on DVD: Disney Nature Earth, M*A*S*H, State of Play, Sugar
The original Planet Earth is one of the greatest, most beautifully photographed documentaries ever made. But this rapid-read edition is a still-stunning substitute if you're time-challenged.

A culinary trip back to the weird side of the Seventies with The Munchies Eatbook
There was a bridge period between 1960s casserole hell and the early, severe era of health food, and this might fall under the category of processed hippie food. In other words, the counterculture did not switch over from Hostess cupcakes to wheat germ in a day.
Blaska's Blog invites Brenda Konkel to the Manor
Brenda Konkel was burrowed face down into her laptop computer at Falk elementary school on August 26 for the "Neighborhoods Restoring Safety" meeting when I approached.

MadTracks: 'Little Miss Sunshine' by the Sean Michael Dargan Band
With lyrics like "The way that she brakes when she steers / The lengths she will go to are taller than her gears," the first track on the Sean Michael Dargan Band's new EP, Feel Good Hit of the Summer, sounds like a love song for some feisty, scrappy, vertically challenged young woman. In actuality, it's a love song about an old Volkswagen van.
Madison eats agenda: Moo de Grass, Taste of Madison, and LaborFest
The coming week, in events that get to your heart through your stomach.

The Week: August 31-September 3, 2009
Summer winds down over the next few days in anticipation of one last big holiday blowout before the start of the autumn arts season. The calendar this week includes: a talk by Cleve Jones; and, live music by the Jason Horowitz Band, William Jamerson, the Sean Michael Dargan Band, L.O.S.T. S.O.U.L.S., O.A.R., and The Spits.
Mozart program kicks off Token Creek Chamber Music Festival
Pianist Robert Levin is an old friend of the Token Creek Chamber Music Festival, held annually at the refurbished DeForest barn of John and Rose Mary Harbison. As he did last year, Levin opened this 2009 festival with an all-Mozart program on Saturday.
Blaska's Blog unites with the community at Elver Park
I ate two grilled hamburgers, heard some good rap music (not gangsta) and talked to some nice people. I stayed clear of the dunk tank, for which I was nominated by more than one attendee. As Bob Uecker might say, “Ah these fans! They love me."
The King Street Block Party is on!
After a wave of light rain, the stage is back up on King Street and the Blueheels are ready to go shortly after 8 pm. If you're reading this on Saturday night, put on your slicker and join us in the street!
Vinyl Cave: Detroit grease and soul by Andre Williams
The Fortune sides display the stew of influences that have continued to emerge throughout Andre Williams' career. Including singles released as a solo artist and with groups the Five Dollars, the Don Juans and others, there's straight doo-wop, crooners, jump R&B, weird near-novelty numbers and risque semi-spoken diatribes in the vein of the infamous "Jail Bait."
Southwest Madison neighborhood picnic planned for Elver Park on Saturday
Shamawya Curtis is tired of people on Madison’s southwest side pointing fingers. She and others are planning a community picnic on Saturday at Elver Park. Dubbed "United We Stand," the picnic’s goal is to get everybody — she stresses the "everybody" part — in the community together for food, fun and games.
APT's fine Long Day's Journey into Night is bleak stuff
As the third and final play to open this season in American Players Theatre's new indoor venue, Long Day's Journey into Night again demonstrates how the Touchstone Theatre is allowing the company to produce fare that wouldn't work "up the hill."
Beer Here: Oktoberfest from Sprecher Brewing
The Oktoberfests have begun arriving on shelves near you. At the risk of seeming to wish away the remaining days of summer, when Marzens begin turning up it means that the cooler nights and colors of fall are not too far off, and the beer season is changing too.

The Week[end]: August 28-30, 2009
This penultimate weekend of summer is shaping up to be one of its busiest. Find some end-of-season fun at: the Orton Park Festival and its After Dark Party, the Middleton Good Neighbor Festival, the King Street Block Party, and the Token Creek Chamber Music Festival; a new gallery installation by Julie Ganser and Jeremy Wineberg; Dane Dances and a Michael Jackson tribute party; and, more live music by Dan Baird with Mauro Magellan and Keith Christopher, Pale Young Gentlemen with Flatbear, Steez, Siv, Pistol Pete, and The Coal Men.
Blaska's Blog: A neighborly code of conduct
In 18 years as a working daily newspaperman I learned that conflict makes news. I’ve spent the 19 years since unlearning that trite journalistic trope.

A guide for enjoying the inaugural Ride the Drive Madison
Billed as a car-free and care-free celebration of Madison's bike-friendly reputation, Ride the Drive promises to afford the rare opportunity to enjoy a perspective of the city usually reserved for people in motor vehicles, traveling at 25 miles per hour or more.
Madame Fromage: Simple summer spaghetti with bocconcini
Okay, okay, maybe this is a little cute, but I am in love with putting bocconcini on top of pasta in place of meatballs. Bocconcini, or baby mozzarella in general, has always made me crazy-happy, especially when it's fresh. I like that springy mouthfeel, and I love how the mild taste plays off tomatoes and basil.
Wilmington on DVD: Duplicity, Trouble the Water, Tyson, and Icons of Sci-Fi
Here's a quartet of actors who should get your motor running even if they were showing up for another movie about championship poker or for a bio-drama on Calvin Coolidge -- and Duplicity is high-grade, silky-smooth stuff, near the top of its class.

Does Coconate's have the best Chicago dog in Madison?
I can't say for sure, but Coconate's may be the only hot dog cart in the world to call itself a trattoria. Trattoria or no, it's one of the few hot dog carts in Madison at all, and it's devoted to serving red hots up Chicago style.
Ride the Drive Madison wants you... to volunteer!
With only a few days to go until Ride the Drive, organizers continue to solicit volunteers for the inaugural event. Scheduled for this Sunday, the celebration will close about six miles of downtown streets to motor vehicles -- opening the route to bicyclists, pedestrians, in-line skaters and other non-motorized participants.
