Know Boundaries says farewell with The Ghost Spell
It's been a quiet year for fans of Madison hip-hop/rock innovators Know Boundaries, as the band has only played a couple shows in town since releasing a live disc last fall. They're returning to the High Noon Saloon stage this Saturday, but it's a farewell bow -- the group is disbanding after a bit less than a decade together.
Beer Here: Red Lager from Leinenkugel's
Have you tried to find a Leinenkugel's beer on tap in Madison recently? A few weeks ago, I stopped in Chippewa Falls to see the relatively new Leinie Lodge hospitality center. The visit reacquainted me with a few of the brewery's mainstays, enough so that over the Labor Day weekend I thought a Leinie's Red sounded like a good beer to pair with a burger at lunch.
'On your left!' Madison bike path warning gets the haiku treatment
Many pedestrians, in-line skaters and even other cyclists may be confused about how to react when they hear "Left!" and that it is not unreasonable for them, startled upon hearing this barked by a cyclist about to whiz by at 20 mph, to misinterpret it as a command to move to their left -- into the cyclist's desired path.
Door County Century Bike Ride to raise money for colon cancer blood test
The Door County Century Bike Ride has been held for 20 years to raise money for Sevastopol High School in Institute. This year, the organizers agreed to help raise money to help develop a blood test that will detect colon cancer early on.

Madame Fromage: What I Learned About Cheese This Summer
Back in April, I started cheese-blogging. Since then, I've spent five months researching, sampling and serving my favorite dairy knockouts, which have mostly been blues. Here are 10 things I've discovered.

Blaska's Blog hits the road in style
We are having the most delightful weather -- like sauvignon blanc, so clear and refreshing -- and I have been out enjoying it. The weather and the white wine.

In the Beginning by Mercury Players is a clever but flawed creation
For a lot of us -- even those of us who deplore Christian fundamentalism -- the apparently never-ending argument over evolution versus creationism has become awfully tiresome. So the Mercury Players deserve credit for their latest show at the Bartell Theatre, In the Beginning, an imperfect but refreshing spin on How All of This Got Started.
Vinyl Cave: Sold for Prevention of Disease Only by Wilderness Road
Sometimes when one's record collection is too large, albums can sit around mostly forgotten. Occasionally, hanging on to something random pays off when an album becomes much more appreciated long after first hearing it -- a situation that's usually accompanied by the reaction "Why didn't I notice this before?"
A Book A Week: The Dressmaker by Elizabeth Birkelund Oberbeck
This book was so forgettable that I forgot to blog about it. It's one of the books I bought at Powell's in Portland, Oregon, back in the beginning of August. The plot sounded like something I would like: a simple tailor in rural France is transformed into a leading couturier when he creates a fabulous wedding dress for a socialite.
Praise for APT in The Wall Street Journal
As he has in the past, today Wall Street Journal theater critic Terry Teachout reviews productions at American Players Theatre, the Spring Green company that for arts lovers is one of the best things about summer in this part of Wisconsin.
Remembering Irwin Goodman
They say you can't buy happiness. The life of Irwin Goodman proves you can. He didn't buy it for himself, of course, except indirectly -- the happiness he got from the happiness of others, whose lives he and his brother Robert improved through their kindness, decency and exceptional philanthropy.
Tour the threatened Anderberg House in Fitchburg
There will be an open house at the Historic Anderberg House -- sometimes called the "pink house" -- at the Drumlin Farm on Saturday. The house has been threatened with demolition by the Alexander Company, which bought the Drumlin Farm and is evicting its tenants.
Madison police ticket motorists failing to yield to pedestrians
I've lived in a few places -- Phnom Penh, Knoxville -- that were downright hostile to people who walked or biked. One of the things that excited me about moving to Madison was its reputation for embracing walking and biking as modes of transportation.
Beer Here: Slow Eddie from the Grumpy Troll
Every now and then in my quest to keep up on what's brewing in southern Wisconsin, I'm confronted with a creation that just doesn't fit mainstream beer flavors. I put chili or hot pepper beer among those considered atypical. Recently, during a stop at the Grumpy Troll in Mount Horeb, I was introduced to a favorite of the locals called Slow Eddie.

Madison lacks preservation planner at crucial time
With the recession, Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz has had a freeze on filling any new positions, absent his approval. But are some positions too important to leave vacant?
MadTracks: 'Tables Turning' by The Kentucky Waterfalls
The term "Kentucky Waterfall" doesn't just refer to the most scenic portions of the Cumberland River in the Bluegrass State's Daniel Boone National Forest. It's also code for "mullet hairdo," lending the sharp crackle of irony to Evan Murdock and Katie Powderly's latest musical project bearing the name.
