February is a special month for many songwriters. The season of blizzards and valentines is also Album Writing Month, an annual songwriting challenge launched by Madison expat Burr Settles. MadTracks: 'Ooh Aah' by Baghdad Scuba Review

Since its genesis as an informal coalition of players helping out singer-songwriter John Schneider at gigs, Madison progressive rock band Baghdad Scuba Review has grown into a consistent presence in the scene. By now local music followers have probably just about gotten used to the group's unusual name -- "all the good ones were taken so we just made something up," says bassist Erik Riedasch. >More
MadTracks: 'Last Kiss on a Sinking Ship' by Sleeping in the Aviary (video)

Ahoy! Sleeping in the Aviary, the whimsical, Madison-bred garage-pop band that moved to Minneapolis a little while back, has crafted a high seas tale as part of its new album, Great Vacation! At first, the video looks like a parody of Titanic but if you watch the whole thing, you'll realize it's more clever than most spoofs of James Cameron's film. >More
MadTracks: 'Been Thinkin a Ways' by Whitney Mann (video)

Sometimes pure, honest simplicity is what makes a song great. Local alt-country songstress Whitney Mann has mastered the art of artlessness with her new song, "Been Thinkin a Ways," whose unpretentious charm has mesmerized audiences at her recent gigs opening for country legends Willie Nelson and George Jones. >More
