MadTracks -- 'Maybe, Baby, I Still Want You' by the Home Demo Vixens

Every now and then, you need something you can swing to: not the kind of swinging that involves bored couples and a bowl full of keys, or even the kind that involves a playground, but something you can move to with carefree enthusiasm. >More
MadTracks -- 'Loaded All Day' by The Von Ehrics

"Loaded All Day" by The Von Ehrics has one of those melodies that would work just as well in a '60s protest-folk setting as a punk-flavored country tune. Maybe it's just the catchy chorus, but there seems to be a gravity to the song that's reminiscent of something reflective to the point of being spiritual, kind of like an old Joan Baez song. >More
MadTracks -- 'Armageddon' by Ashley Daniels

Whether or not they're religious, most people don't take the word "Armageddon" very lightly. For some it's the prophesied site of the final showdown between God and Satan; for others it's a term reserved for any number of horrific events with wide-reaching consequences. >More
MadTracks -- 'Sixth Severence' by The Cemetery Improvement Society

The Cemetery Improvement Society as a name makes sense when you consider Marc Claggett and Russell Paul's fascination with zany, self-directed projects, which include wacky online photo-curation efforts, an ongoing arm wrestling and ice sculpture competition and, in the case Claggett, a new label called Analogy Records. >More
MadTracks -- 'Rome' by Danielle Brittany

Clad in a mod-style dress, plus long hair and vampish bangs, the Danielle Brittany of promotional posters bears a resemblance to the Velvet Underground's Nico and Marianne Faithfull. It makes sense given that style is a big part of what she does. The local chanteuse, who's a fairly new addition to the local music scene, has been making her name and face known in a variety of ways. >More
MadTracks -- 'Trade' (Latin Remix) by Felicia Alima featuring Chino XL

Felicia Alima has taken the high road, mixing crowd-pleasers with songs that have more of a social-change message. One such track, the Latin mix of her single "Trade," takes a heavy topic -- human trafficking -- and adds Alima's globetrotting spirit and the rapping talents of Chino XL. >More
MadTracks -- 'To All Tiny Creatures' by All Tiny Creatures

All Tiny Creatures, a local four-piece that includes members of an experimental rock group, a prog rock band, and a Talking Heads tribute act, certainly knows the power of rock to charm and seduce. But it's the other side of what they do -- electronic experimentation woven into a live performance -- that's perhaps the most interesting. >More
MadTracks -- 'Peace Dance' by the Chicago Yestet

Trombonist Joel Adams grew up in Madison in the '90s, then migrated to New York in 2000 to follow his musical ambitions. He now resides in Chicago, where he's the leader of the Chicago Yestet -- a jazz ensemble made up of seven horn players, a rhythm section and a spoken-word artist -- but returns to town once a month to visit friends and sit in on a session or two with Clyde Stubblefield. >More
MadTracks -- 'All The Fevered Colours' by The Projection People

Coming together from a handful of different local music projects -- Middleworld, Dafino and Revolving Doors -- The Projection People formed in November 2006 as an outlet for all of the music that didn't fit the sound and image of the musicians' other bands. >More
MadTracks -- 'The Book I Read' by Houses in Motion

While Madison's Houses In Motion takes its name from the Talking Heads' 1980 album Remain in Light, it offers a little more action and a bit less content than the band it exists to exalt. As a tribute band, that's what it's designed to do. >More
