Fringe Foods: Hook's Cheese 15-year Cheddar from FromaginationCheese that takes you back to Forrest Gump and the ChunnelKyle Nabilcy on Thursday 12/17/2009 2:00 pm, (4) Comments, (9) RecommendationsYeah, you can get a 2-year aged cheddar from Hook's. You can get a 4-year, a 7-year, or even a 12-year cheddar, and most ages in between. But right now, there's one vintage that everyone's talking about, from Los Angeles to upstate New York: the 15-year cheddar currently selling for no less than $35 per pound at Hook's factory store and more elsewhere. >More Fringe Foods watches Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre World episode in WisconsinThe guy who's eaten everything comes to the Badger StateKyle Nabilcy on Wednesday 10/28/2009 2:00 pm, (8) RecommendationsFood critic, chef, and Minnesotan Andrew Zimmern has been revealing the strangest of foreign foods to American television viewers since his show, Bizarre Foods, debuted on the Travel Channel in February 2007. He has expanded his focus to culture as well as cuisine with Bizarre World, and on Tuesday night we were treated to his trip to Wisconsin. >More Fringe Foods: Crispy pig bung from Asia ExpressA venture into a lesser-known portion of porkKyle Nabilcy on Wednesday 06/24/2009 2:00 pm, (1) Comment, (21) RecommendationsLike menudo, pig bung is a product of efficiency, frugality, and a little bit of poverty thrown in for good measure. When the finer cuts -- the belly, the hocks, the loin -- are gone, "what's left" becomes "what's for dinner." Think ears, hooves, jowls, and bung. >More Fringe Foods: Rajbhog from Maharani Indian GroceryA cheese dessert dish to challenge your palate and your tongueKyle Nabilcy on Tuesday 05/05/2009 2:00 pm, (16) RecommendationsThe Maharani grocery, like rajbhog, is small but packed with goodies. There are a lot of spices, naturally; the dishes that Americans are most familiar with are often differentiated only by the spice profile. There's also a lot of pre-made items, frozen and awaiting only a warm-up. And there are the shelf-stable, prefab items like rajbhog. >More Fringe Foods: An Easter egg hunt at Brocach, The Old Fashioned, and MuramotoPut something deep-fried, pickled, or raw into your basketKyle Nabilcy on Monday 04/06/2009 2:00 pm, (1) Comment, (158) RecommendationsThere's one symbol of easterosity -- a concept I'm using in the spirit of Stephen Colbert's "truthiness" -- that crosses almost all demographic lines, and that's the egg. >More Fringe Foods: Erotic confections and The Beer Lube at Naughty Novelties and Bakery Taking the shortest route to love by the freewayKyle Nabilcy on Thursday 02/12/2009 2:00 pm, (18) RecommendationsYou know you've seen it. Whether you're off, pole in hand, to hit the slopes at Cascade Mountain, or looking to get wet at Mt. Olympus, you've driven past it at Interstate speeds. But being in a hurry is a convenient excuse: anyone passing Naughty Novelties Bakery & Adult Gifts in DeForest has probably joked about what exactly makes up an "erotic cake." >More Fringe Foods: Alligator at Liliana's RestaurantTell it to its face that it tastes like chickenKyle Nabilcy on Monday 01/26/2009 1:00 pm, (18) RecommendationsWhen we humans eat alligator, the best we can say is that it tastes like chicken. Chicken! The animal most often equated with cowardice! Who's a gator got to maul to get some respect around here? >More Fringe Foods: A winter wonderland of unexpected Madison chocolatesFind sharp, sweet, and savory treats at Gail Ambrosius, TerraSource, and David BaccoKyle Nabilcy on Thursday 12/18/2008 11:00 am, (27) RecommendationsThere's an old joke chocolatiers like to tell this time of year. "When is Christmas not really Christmas? When it's a white Christmas." See, it's funny because white chocolate isn't really chocolate, plus the whole Bing Crosby, "White Christmas" thing... Okay, it's not only cornball and a little obtuse, it's also not an old joke. I just made it up. >More Fringe Foods: Lutefisk dinner at Lakeview Lutheran Church in MadisonScandinavians concoct a blessedly rare congregation of whitefish and lyeKyle Nabilcy on Monday 11/10/2008 2:30 pm, (1) Comment, (27) RecommendationsLakeview's lutefisk doesn't stink, and I mean that in every way possible. Primarily, it truly doesn't smell badly. I could tell as soon as I walked in the front door that fish was being cooked, but that's true of any Door County fish boil or a VFW hall on Friday evenings. Nothing was retch-worthy, nothing approached the stank of durian. I was seated with a happily chatting group of diners at a front table, and loaded up my plate. >More Fringe Foods: Ackee and codfish at David's Jamaican CuisineKeep warm with the Jamaican national dishKyle Nabilcy on Wednesday 10/15/2008 2:34 pm, (113) RecommendationsJamaican restaurants in Madison cover all the bases. Jolly Bob's is kinda classy and the prices on their menu show it. Take one look at the cluttered exterior of Jamerica, and it's clear they're targeting the rasta demographic. But one eatery fills the niche of basic Jamaican, marked with minimal affectation and serving the one dish for which I was truly searching. That joint is David's Jamaican Cuisine, and the dish is ackee and codfish. >More
