One of the most sacred holidays for the beer enthusiast is St. Patrick's Day. For most, the beer for this day is the embodiment of the perfect pour, that black velvet elixir of the season that shapes our very impression of the dark beer made famous by Ireland's Arthur Guinness. "It has a strangle hold on what we expect for a stout," says Lakefront Brewery president Russ Klisch. Bocks are traditional brewed in the winter and released near the end of the season in anticipation of spring. "This is probably my personal favorite brewing time because Maibock and Blonde Doppelbock are two beers I absolutely love to brew and drink," says Kirby Nelson, brewmaster at Capital Brewery in Middleton. Over the last year-and-a-half, Sand Creek has introduced its Select Series of beers sold in four packs. Brewery co-owner Jim Wiesender explains: "These are special beers that we allow our brewmaster Todd Krueger to a little go crazy with, make something a little different, and show off." Tyranena owner and brewmaster Rob Larson recently created a little bit of a political stir when he gave the Lake Mills brewery's loyal fans notice of a price hike starting on Inauguration Day. He described how the brewery is now required to give its wholesalers a 45-day notice, and cited higher costs for bottles, malt, hops, packaging, and cleaning supplies. This left him with little choice but to increase prices, a bump of 50 cents per pint and half-growler refill in the brewery's tasting room. >More

The Grumpy Troll brewpub in Mount Horeb offered a different kind of winter diversion last week by hosting a Medieval Feast Beer Dinner. Five courses and dessert were paired with beers that had been carefully selected by brewmaster Mark Duchow. As the theme would suggest, the overarching premise featured dishes such as Camelot Salad, King Arthur Stone Soup, lamb chops, and leg of fowl. Duchow's major contribution was a special creation called Stein Beer, made with an Old World brewing technique that leaves some very distinctive flavors. >More

I recently found myself needing a break from my seasonal quest for the perfect big malty winter beer and discovered a wonderfully hoppy surprise at the Hilldale Mall outpost of the Great Dane. Normally this time of year I'm pretty content with finding something robust and dark to take the chill off a cold snowy day. However, after considering a few of those big beers, the ones that can sometimes suggest time for a nap or bedtime, I was lured by the Dane's description of this new beer: "medium to high bitterness and aromatic hoppiness." >More

This is perfect for the winter season, a ramped up brew with characteristics shared by his well-known Blonde Doppelbock and Baltic Porter. Only this beer, while big and malty, has a smoothness and complexity that makes for a more refined flavor profile. Maybe that's why Nelson named it after his wife? >More

Take Aran Madden, the company co-owner and the person behind the beer recipes at Furthermore Beer of Spring Green. Madden is out with a new beer made with beets. That's correct, beets!
