The Monroe Street Bistro, 2611 Monroe Street, open less than a year, has closed its doors. But it’s just temporary, to complete its transformation to jacs (that’s right, lowercase, no apostrophe).

“There will be a lot of changes,” says general manager Rebecca Mergen. A number of factors, including the current economic environment, prompted the bistro to revamp.

“Our original managing partners are gone,” says Mergen, and “it was time to head in a different direction.”

The new menu will show more of a Mediterranean influence, rather than French. And there will be a kids’ menu this time around. Mainly, Mergen says, “We love the neighborhood, we embrace the Dudgeon-Monroe neighborhood, its values. We have been listening to what the neighborhood says it wants. We’re retooling to answer some of that feedback from patrons.”

Head chef Krista Warshauer has a ”fine hand” with making ice cream, says Mergen. So that will be on the menu as well, along with drinks that feature the homemade ice cream which “we’re really looking forward to.”

Mergen is optimistic that the “soft open” will take place Monday, July 27. A grand opening is scheduled for the Labor Day weekend. The phone number will remain the same, 441-5444.
